Position Summary:
We are seeking a compassionate and dependable Addiction Prevention Counselor to join our growing team. The ideal candidate is passionate about providing mental health services to the unserved and underserved community. You will play a key role in helping clients achieve meaningful change through evidence-based, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, therapeutic practices. This position operates under a contract with Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health and staff must meet both County and organization requirements.

About the Position:

The current openings are for Bachelor’s level candidates for a Housing and Supportive Services program that provides housing and supportive services for tenants experiencing significant mental illness and who otherwise would be unhoused. Addiction Prevention Counselors will provide comprehensive, culturally and therapeutically appropriate, quality mental health services including direct case management, collateral services, rehabilitation services, substance abuse screening and treatment, including individual and group services. Addiction prevention counselors will provide independent living skills, and assist individuals in need of comprehensive care to maintain their housing, stabilize behaviors, improve social and emotional development, and reduce their risk of further deterioration. These services require a harm reduction model that includes a trauma informed, developmental, needs-based, strengths-based approach to wellness and recovery.  Addiction prevention counselors will work with individuals on building daily living skills, linkage to community supports, educational services, vocational services, substance use, co-occurring services, and housing support services. The program goal is to assist tenants with maintaining their housing and assist with decreasing the use of acute psychiatric services, incarceration, justice and child welfare involvement, homelessness, co-occurring substance abuse and mental health issues, education problems, and other risky behaviors. Qualifications:

Education and Experience: 
Pattern I

·         Graduation from an accredited college or university with bachelor’s degree with preference for major coursework in addiction counseling, criminal justice, mental health, social or behavioral science, child development, liberal arts, education, or closely related field and equivalent to two (2) years of experience working with children, client, young adults and families in a therapeutic environment.  
·         Community based experience with Medi-Cal population preferred. 
Pattern II

·         Graduation from an accredited college or university with associate’s degree with preference for major coursework in addiction counseling, criminal justice, mental health, social or behavioral science, child development, liberal arts, education, or closely related field and equivalent to three (3) years of experience working with children, client, young adults and families in a therapeutic environment.
·         Community based experience with Medi-Cal population preferred. 
Pattern III

·         Graduation from an accredited college or university with master’s degree with preference for major coursework in addiction counseling, criminal justice, mental health, social or behavioral science, child development, liberal arts, education, or closely related field and equivalent to one (1) year of experience working with children, client, young adults, and families in a therapeutic environment.  
·         Community based experience with Medi-Cal population preferred. 
Pattern IV

·         Possession of a CAADAC (California Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors) certification from an accredited state approved agency.  

License or Certification

·         Possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, and proof of automobile liability insurance if required by assignment.
·         Must obtain First Aid and CPR certification within three months of hire and maintain while employed.
Special Requirements

·         Successfully complete reference checks and background investigation to include Live Scan Fingerprinting;
·         Meet qualifications to participate in a Short-Doyle program;
·         Eligible for credentialing;
·         Some positions require meeting County of Fresno qualifications as bilingual in Spanish, Hmong or other languages designated by the County;
·         Community-based positions must use personal transportation in work capacity and include proof of current vehicle liability insurance with minimum coverage of 100/300. Employees will be reimbursed mileage at the IRS Rate;
·         All providers are required to have a valid National Provider Identifier (NPI) number prior to their first day of employment and maintain a valid NPI throughout the duration of their tenure in this role;
·         Must successfully complete all required agency training indicated for this position;
