Job description

Position Summary

The GSRP Classroom Aide assists the Lead Teacher and Associate Teacher in providing a high-quality, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate educational environment for four-year-old children. This role supports daily classroom routines, instructional activities, child supervision, and compliance with Michigan Child Care Licensing Rules and GSRP grant requirements.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Instructional & Classroom Support:

    • Assist in facilitating small-group and individual learning activities aligned with state early learning standards.  

    • Prepare learning materials, craft supplies, and instructional areas before and after activities.  

    • Help implement research-based curriculum models (e.g., HighScope).

    • Support children’s social-emotional growth through positive behavioral guidance and conflict resolution.  

  • Health, Safety & Daily Care:

    • Maintain active visual and auditory supervision of children during indoor play, outdoor time, rest periods, and transitions.  

    • Assist children with personal hygiene routines, including handwashing, toileting, and diapering/accidents as necessary.  

    • Help serve family-style meals and snacks in accordance with CACFP guidelines; assist with cleanup and table sanitation.  

    • Sanitize toys, equipment, and learning spaces daily to comply with state licensing guidelines.  

  • Documentation & Communication:

    • Record objective child observations and anecdotal notes to support ongoing assessment (e.g., COR Advantage).

    • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff at all times.

    • Foster warm, respectful relationships with families during drop-off and pick-up.  

    • Attend staff meetings, program orientations, and required professional development sessions.  

Qualifications

  • Education & Experience:

    • High School Diploma or GED required.  

    • Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or coursework in Early Childhood Education / Child Development preferred.  

    • Previous experience working with preschool-aged children (ages 3–5) preferred.  

  • Certifications & Clearances:

    • Current certification in Pediatric First Aid and Infant/Child CPR (or willingness to obtain prior to start).  

    • Satisfactory completion of the Michigan Child Care Background Check (comprehensive fingerprinting and registry clearance).  

    • Valid TB test clearance and physical capability assessment prior to hire.

    • Active profile in the Michigan Early Childhood Professional Development Registry (MiRegistry).  

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, sit on the floor, bend, and move quickly between classroom and playground environments.  

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40–50 lbs.  

  • Tolerate moderate to loud noise levels typical in a preschool classroom.
