What is a chief police?

A Chief Police, often referred to as Chief of Police, is the highest-ranking officer in a police department. They are responsible for overseeing all police operations, managing department personnel, developing policies, and ensuring public safety within their jurisdiction. Chiefs of Police often work closely with city officials and community leaders to address crime, allocate resources, and implement law enforcement strategies. Their leadership is key to maintaining order and fostering trust between the police force and the community.

What are some of the main challenges a chief police faces in managing a modern police department?

As a Chief Police, you will encounter the challenge of balancing operational demands with administrative responsibilities, such as budget management and policy development. Keeping up with evolving laws, technology, and community expectations requires ongoing training and adaptability. Additionally, fostering a positive department culture and maintaining public trust while ensuring officer wellness are key challenges. Collaboration with local government, other agencies, and the public is frequent and essential for effective leadership.

What does a police chief do?

A police chief oversees the police department they serve. As a police chief, your responsibilities and duties include testing, training, and evaluating officers, assigning promotions, delegating casework, and conducting administrative duties. You also assess the overall success of your department in keeping the community safe and make necessary changes to maximize efficiency. You function as a tactical leader, people manager, and public liaison for the department. You must have several years experience in the field conducting patrols and investigations to gain the skills needed for this role.

The City of Madras is seeking a Police Chiefย for this rapidly growing community ofย 8,200ย in the high desert of Central Oregon less than an hour north of Bend. Madras serves as the county seat of Jefferson County and enjoys overย 300 daysย of sunshine a year.ย
THE CITY OF MADRASย

Established in 1910, the City of Madrasย operatesย under a mayor-council form of governmentย with a budget of $40 million and a team of 45 FTEs. Departments include Administration, Community Development, Finance, Police, and Public Works.ย Theย Cityย is a dynamic organization known for long-range planning, innovative economic development strategies, and progressive development.ย
THE POLICEย DEPARTMENT

The Madras Police Departmentย operatesย with a budget of $3 million and a staff of 15 FTEs: Police Chief, Records Specialist, Evidence Technician, Detective, two Patrol Sergeants, and nine Patrol Officers. Currently, both a Sergeant and a Patrol Officer position are open.ย ย Both commissioned supervisors were promoted from within the agency in the past five years, reflecting the city's commitment to developing leadership internally. Since 2014, Police and City Hall have shared a modern facility that enhances operational efficiency and collaboration.ย ย ย ย
WHY APPLY

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a community-centered police agency in Madras, known as the "Gateway to Central Oregon" andย locatedย at the intersection of two major state highways-Highway 97 and Highway 26. As the county seat and most populous city in Jefferson County, Madras has just over 8,000 residents-small enough to be agile, yet large enough toย accomplishย big things.ย ย ย ย

The Madras Police Department is a well-managed organization staffed by a young and experienced team of commissioned officers and professional support staff. Department members have a phenomenal can-do culture with a family atmosphere and a strong emphasis on community policing. The City Council and community want what is best for Madras and areย very supportiveย of the police department and all City services, making Madras a welcoming and engaged place to serve. Ifย you'reย looking for a friendly, supportive community with a small-town feel-and a workplace of dedicated professionals who strive to deliver excellent in-person police services-this may be the right opportunity for you.ย
