Job Description:
I. Position Summary
The Chief Engineer is in charge of the building maintenance, equipment and repairs needed on-site. Manages and mentors maintenance staff to ensure work is completed properly and timely . Some of the duties of the chief engineer include purchasing supplies, materials and equipment while not exceeding budget, and keeping stock of necessary inventory. The chief engineer must work closely with other managers or supervisors to ensure operations run smoothly and meet standards of safety and cleanliness.
II. Position Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership to direct reports, including performance management and feedback, and formal annual performance reviews.
  • Mentor all new and existing staff to help maximize abilities.
  • Responsible for hiring, counseling, and discipline of department staff according to HSL established policies.
  • Participate in the recruitment process to ensure that the department is adequately staffed.
  • Supervise every phase of projects from start to completion.
  • Delegate tasks to engineering team.
  • Train staff and supervise staff training.
  • Supervise equipment installation.
  • Perform quality control checks on all systems and products.
  • Purchase supplies, materials and equipment, ensuring not to exceed budget.

III. Core Competencies
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive issues.
  • Ability to solve problems involving several options in situations.

III Qualifications
  • Combined 5-10 years commercial building engineering, or Facilities Management experience, required.
  • Three years of supervisor experience as senior or equivalent lead role.
  • Five years of facilities operational experience over multiple buildings.
  • Experience in construction and maintenance cost estimating practices.
  • Extensive experience in reading complex architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, communications and landscaping plans.
  • In-depth knowledge of general maintenance practices for structural, mechanical, electrical and landscaping components.
  • Working knowledge on the functioning of HVAC units, required.
  • EPA Technician Certification required, preferably Universal Classification.
  • Massachusetts refrigeration license.
  • Building automation systems experience required.
  • Must be proficient in Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Requires excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Requires relating to people in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Requires working to established procedures and maintaining reliable work attendance.
  • Requires verbal communication skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Able to make effective decisions quickly.
  • Ability to create effective working relationships with employees.
  • Must be able to maintain a positive attitude and work under pressure.
  • Must have a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to provide efficient, timely, reliable and courteous service to customers.
  • Ability to effectively present information.
  • Requires advanced analytical and quantitative skills.

IV. Physical Requirements (ADA Requirements)
Work conditions vary for this position, and hazardous conditions can be common. Chemicals, steam, electricity, and heavy machinery are commonly encountered; wet, noisy, hot, and cold conditions may also exist. Physical requirements to include stooping, standing, climbing and frequent lifting of a minimum of 50 lbs.
