Assistant Chief Engineer - JLL

What this job involves:

As an Assistant Chief Engineer at JLL, you will serve as a key technical leader responsible for ensuring the seamless operation and maintenance of all building systems in a multi-tenant property. Your expertise will be instrumental in supervising engineering teams, managing critical infrastructure, and delivering exceptional service to clients and tenants. This role offers an exciting opportunity to apply your extensive engineering knowledge while contributing to JLL's mission of creating transformative solutions for the real estate industry. You will work closely with the Chief Engineer to drive operational excellence, manage budgets, and lead a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Oversee the maintenance and continuous operation of all building systems, ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime.
  • Supervise and manage engineers and maintenance staff, including hiring, training, coaching, and supporting their professional development.
  • Create and routinely update documented maintenance plans that include preventive, predictive, and reactive maintenance procedures.
  • Participate regularly in client-facing and property team communications to ensure alignment and address operational concerns.
  • Lead, create, and manage the engineering budget while participating in the overall operating budget process.
  • Select, schedule, supervise, and direct contractors; monitor property access and provide necessary request forms.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies and service calls, ensuring prompt resolution and tenant satisfaction.
  • Lead and organize ongoing technical training, safety meetings, and operational process improvement programs.
  • Assist with Pay Scan, distribute work orders to the team, and manage scheduling to optimize resource allocation.
  • Provide the Chief Engineer with weekly operational updates and status reports on building systems and team performance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10+ years of related engineering experience, especially as a Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, or similar role.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of engineering experience in a multi-tenant building environment.
  • Proven people management experience leading and developing engineering teams.
  • Third Grade Boiler License - Houston (required).
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams).
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and frequently climb, bend, kneel, and lift as required by the role.
  • Comfort using ladders up to 30 feet tall and working in varied physical conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Trade school education, union training, military service, or college degree in a related field
  • Universal CFC EPA certification.
  • Experience developing and managing capital improvement plans for commercial properties.
  • Background in budget development and financial management for engineering operations.
  • Strong customer service orientation with excellent communication skills across all levels.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and work order platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement technical training programs for engineering staff.
  • Knowledge of building automation systems and energy management strategies

Location:Onsite - Houston, TX

Shift: 7:00am to 3:30pm
