This is a chemist supervisor position within the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), performing duties under the general supervision of the Director of Environmental Chemistries. This position will supervise at least 2.0 direct report FTEs.

This position will serve as a working supervisor for the Environmental Health Division (EHD) in the Organic Chemistry section. This section performs testing for the Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as well as private customers in both biological and environmental matrices.

This position is a working supervisor and will have analytical testing responsibility in addition to supervisory tasks. These tasks include: managing daily work activities, recruiting, facilitating staff training, evaluating employee performance, project management, budget analysis, Enforcement sample management and ensuring proper QA/QC is being followed.

The employee in this position is expected to use the tools and principles of quality management in performing their daily work including the following: Demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with other colleagues, supervisors, and all customers and partners. Provide constructive feedback for the purpose of continuous improvement in a manner that is supportive of the State Laboratory of Hygiene and its mission. Use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit. Present ideas, carry out assignments, and provide information as required. Participate in continuous learning through professional development activities.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Oversees the inspection, maintenance, and repairs of equipment and instrumentation to ensure optimal and safe operation - 5%
  • Monitors scientific reporting to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures - 10%
  • Serves as a subject matter technical expert and unit liaison to stakeholders - 15%
  • Develops, performs, and interprets test results or assays from chemical analysis to ensure quality results to the submitter - 25%
  • Recruits new employees and conducts employee performance evaluations - 5%
  • Develops operating policies and laboratory procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives to ensure quality control - 5%
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees - 20%
  • Oversees budget and schedules of operational work plans for a specialized technical laboratory area - 10%

Compensation:

Minimum Salary $78,000/year.

Required Qualifications:
  • Experience on at least one of the following test system: Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector (FID), Electron Capture Detector (ECD), Mass Spec (MS)
  • Knowledge of budget management such as reconciling charges, instrument purchases, service contracts, grant support, tracking expenses, or issuing quotes, etc.
  • Experience working in an accredited laboratory employing QA/QC practices
  • Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an advanced analytical role
  • Experience working with external stakeholders such as local, state, or federal agencies as well in internal partners
  • Experience with one or more of the following testing: PCB, Pesticide, PBDEs, VOCs, TOC.
  • Experience as a Hazardous Waste Coordinator or with laboratory waste disposal.
Education:

A Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.

Additional Information:

  • This position requires occasional work on weekends and into the evening hours.
  • Regular work hours for this position are typically 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and driving record that meets University of Wisconsin Risk Management guidelines is desired.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and good laboratory practice is desired.
  • Experience as a team lead or lead worker.
  • This is a leadership position and requires good interpersonal skills.
  • This position requires effective oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • This position requires attention to detail.
  • This position requires strong time management skills such as the ability to independently manage and prioritize a diverse workload with competing priorities to meet deadlines and mission objectives.
