How much do chemical research assistant jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for chemical research assistant in the United States is $19.33, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.90 and $23.08 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a chemical research assistant do?

A Chemical Research Assistant supports scientists and researchers in laboratories by conducting experiments, preparing chemical solutions, collecting and analyzing data, and maintaining lab equipment. They assist in the development of new products or processes by following strict safety protocols and detailed instructions. Their work is essential for ensuring accurate results and advancing scientific research in fields such as pharmaceuticals, materials science, and environmental studies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chemical research assistant?

To thrive as a Chemical Research Assistant, you need a solid background in chemistry, laboratory techniques, and data analysis, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field. Familiarity with analytical instruments like HPLC, GC-MS, spectroscopy, and common lab software is essential, and safety certifications such as OSHA training are often required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork and communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies ensure accurate experimental results, maintain lab safety, and foster productive collaboration in research environments.

What are some common challenges chemical research assistants face when working on laboratory projects?

Chemical Research Assistants often encounter challenges such as maintaining strict adherence to safety protocols, troubleshooting unexpected experimental results, and managing multiple tasks under tight deadlines. They may also need to quickly adapt to new research methods or technologies and ensure accurate documentation of experimental data. Collaborating effectively with senior researchers and communicating findings clearly are key to overcoming these challenges and contributing to the success of the research team.

What is the difference between Chemical Research Assistant vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectChemical Research AssistantLaboratory Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Chemistry or related fieldAssociate's degree or relevant certification
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academic institutions, industry R&DClinical, industrial, or manufacturing labs
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, pharmaceutical companies, research institutesHospitals, manufacturing plants, quality control labs
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for research roles, project involvementCompared for technical support, lab operations

The Chemical Research Assistant typically holds a bachelor's degree and works primarily in research-focused environments, assisting with experiments and data analysis. Laboratory Technicians often have an associate's degree and focus on routine lab procedures, quality control, and sample processing. While both roles support laboratory functions, the Chemical Research Assistant is more involved in experimental design and research activities, whereas the Laboratory Technician emphasizes operational tasks and sample management.

How much does a chemical research assistant get paid?

The average salary for a chemical research assistant typically ranges from $35,000 to $55,000 per year, depending on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while those with advanced skills or certifications can earn higher wages, often working in laboratory or research environments with standard working hours.

What qualifications do I need to be a chemical research assistant?

To become a chemical research assistant, candidates typically need at least a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field. Relevant skills include laboratory techniques, data analysis, and familiarity with scientific equipment; some positions may require experience with specific tools or certifications in safety protocols. Strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a team are also important.

R&D Chemical Technician Position Overview:

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented R&D Chemical Technician to join our coolant research and development team. The primary responsibility of the Chemical Technician will be to provide technical support and assist in the design, development, and testing of the corrosion protection properties, and other physical and chemical properties of coolants. In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting our vehicle cooling system antifreeze/coolant R&D efforts by conducting formulations, coolant sample blending, chemical analyses, performing corrosion tests including electrochemical tests and non-electrochemical tests, conducting metallographic analysis of used vehicle parts or post-test samples to help identifying the root causes of the failures or issues observed. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in chemistry, excellent laboratory skills, and a passion for innovation. Previous experience with corrosion or electrochemical testing is desirable but it is not required. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and development projects in the field of thermal management fluids.

**This is a full-time position based at our Danbury, CT facility and will require a local candidate for on-site working Monday-Friday each week.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate within the R&D team to design and develop thermal management or heat transfer fluids, including fluid sample preparation, instrument operation, test data collection.
  • Set up and conduct experiments to evaluate the corrosion protection performance, characteristics, and physical and chemical properties of thermal management or heat transfer fluids, ensuring accurate data collection and analysis, as well as recording the test procedures and results into lab notebooks.
  • Perform chemical measurements and corrosion tests, such polarization resistance measurements, polarization curve measurements, galvanostatic tests, galvanic corrosion tests, and other ASTM corrosion tests at various test temperature and conditions.
  • Prepare and analyze heat transfer fluid solutions and metal samples for use in electrochemical corrosion tests and non-electrochemical corrosion tests. Conduct metallographic analysis of used vehicle parts or post-test samples to help identifying the root causes of corrosion failures or issues observed.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
  • Compile and organize experimental data, prepare reports, and present findings to the R&D team.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to optimize device performance, troubleshoot technical challenges, and propose innovative solutions.
  • Assist in the documentation and intellectual property protection of research findings and experimental procedures.
  • Support the transfer of successful research prototypes to the manufacturing team by providing technical guidance and specifications.

Requirements:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in chemistry, biology or a related field.
  • Experience working in a chemical research laboratory, preferably in the field of electrochemistry or automotive fluids.
  • The ideal candidate should have some exposure or familiarity with electrochemical techniques for corrosion research, such as polarization curve measurements, polarization resistance measurement, Tafel extrapolation, impedance measurements, equivalent circuit model development and curve fitting, as well as other corrosion measurement methods.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to accurately record experimental data.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Proficient in data analysis and visualization software.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information effectively.
