How much do chemical engineering project management jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for chemical engineering project management in the United States is $55.38, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $53.61 and $57.93 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can you make 300k as a chemical engineer?

Senior chemical engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills, and working in high-paying industries or locations can earn salaries around or above $300,000 annually. Achieving this level often requires specialized expertise, management responsibilities, or working in roles such as project managers or technical directors. Entry-level or mid-career chemical engineers typically earn lower salaries, with significant increases possible through experience and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE).

What are some common challenges faced by chemical engineering project managers when coordinating multidisciplinary teams?

Chemical engineering project managers often work with teams that include engineers from various disciplines, technicians, and stakeholders from departments like procurement and safety. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication across these diverse groups, each with their own technical language and priorities. Balancing the technical requirements of the project with budget constraints and timelines also requires strong organizational skills and adaptability. Successful project managers use regular updates, detailed documentation, and collaborative tools to keep everyone aligned and address issues promptly.

Can a chemical engineer become a project manager?

Yes, a chemical engineer can become a project manager by developing skills in leadership, communication, and project planning. Many project managers in engineering fields hold certifications like PMP and have experience managing technical projects, which are valuable for transitioning into project management roles.

Can a chemical engineer make 200k a year?

Chemical engineers can earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced degrees, or leadership roles in the industry. Salaries vary based on location, employer, and specialization, with senior positions in the oil, pharmaceuticals, or specialty chemicals sectors often reaching or exceeding this level.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Chemical Engineering Project Management, and why are they important?

To thrive in Chemical Engineering Project Management, you need a strong background in chemical engineering principles, project planning, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by a PMP certification. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), process simulation tools, and risk assessment systems is highly valuable. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to technical specifications in complex industrial environments.

What does a chemical project engineer do?

A chemical project engineer plans, designs, and oversees chemical process projects to ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance with industry standards. They coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, develop project timelines, and often use engineering software to optimize processes. Strong knowledge of chemical processes, safety protocols, and project management skills are essential in this role.

What is Chemical Engineering Project Management?

Chemical Engineering Project Management involves planning, coordinating, and overseeing projects within the chemical engineering field, such as the design and construction of chemical plants, process improvements, or technology implementation. Project managers in this area ensure that projects meet technical, safety, budget, and timeline requirements. They work closely with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to solve problems, allocate resources, and manage risks throughout the project lifecycle. Effective project management is critical for delivering successful outcomes in complex chemical engineering environments.

What is the difference between Chemical Engineering Project Management vs Chemical Engineering Process Engineer?

AspectChemical Engineering Project ManagementChemical Engineering Process Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering; PMP certification often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license beneficial
Work EnvironmentProject teams, offices, industrial plantsDesign, develop, optimize chemical processes in plants or labs
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing firms, engineering consultancies, oil & gasRefineries, chemical plants, pharmaceuticals, energy sectors

While Chemical Engineering Project Managers oversee project planning, budgeting, and coordination, Chemical Engineering Process Engineers focus on designing and improving chemical processes. Both roles require a strong chemical engineering background, but their daily tasks and responsibilities differ significantly.
