Job description

American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) provides technical development and commercialization of domestic, sustainable sourcing of critical battery materials through lithium-ion battery recycling and battery metal extraction technologies for use in batteries that power electric cars, grid storage applications, and consumer electronics and tools. Our first of kind systems produce commercial-scale battery materials thatย areย sold into the battery manufacturing supply chain.

In the role of Chemical Process Engineer, you will enhance and refine our chemical processes related to our proprietary technologies for lithium-ion battery recycling and primary resource extraction. The successful candidate will work closely with our R&D and scale-up teams, plant operations team, and a range of internal and external specialists to guarantee effective design, construction, and operation of our facilities. The ideal applicant will possess experience in collaborating with research teams to design, install, commission, and operate of first-of-a-kind facilities. A strong enthusiasm for creating, executing, and sustaining efficient chemical manufacturing processes is essential, along with ensuring quality control of outputs, specifying equipment, developing and implementing monitoring and sampling protocols, and thriving in a high-performance, fast-paced environment. The candidate should be a creative problem-solver with a strong interest in scaling processes from bench- or pilot-scale to commercial levels. This includes a consistent emphasis on assessing existing processing steps and proposing and developing innovative solutions to continually enhance system performance and operability. This position will report directly to our Chemical Engineering Lead.

Requirements

  • Design and implement battery recycling & primary resource extraction systems from a laboratory scale basis into pilot and commercial scale systems.ย 
  • Iterate technical improvements to novel processing routes for extracting high purity battery materials consistently from various feedstocks.ย 
  • Support operations and R&D teams by providing technical feedback and test plans for continuous improvement.ย 
  • Size and select process engineering equipment. Coordinate technical requirements to equipment vendors and review equipment and process submittals.ย 
  • Develop and update mass and energy balances for improved chemical processing systems.ย 
  • Complete process system designs leveraging various solids, liquid, and gas processing technologies.ย 
  • Collaborate with program management and construction teams to safely and quickly implement efficient designs.ย 
Qualifications
  • Background in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering
  • 3+ years of engineering/design experienceย 
  • Ability to translate fundamental design principles and equations into functional equipment systemsย 
  • Able to interpret and produce Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)ย 
  • Chemical processing background (Oil, Gas & Chemicals, Water Treatment, Metals & Mining, Mineral Processing, etc.)ย 
  • Ability to positively collaborate in a team environmentย 
  • Strong understanding of both organic and inorganic chemistryย ย 
  • Experience with Autodesk CAD programs (Plant3D, Revit)ย 
  • Experience with chemical process modeling softwareย 
  • Experience sizing equipment, including piping, pumps, as well as working with equipment suppliers on large equipment systems (crystallizers, scrubbers, etc.)
  • Experience developing Basis of Design documentation and process / control narrativesย 
  • Preferred but not required - Licensed Professional Engineer: Chemical or Miningย

Expected Pay Range

$100k - $155k per year.

Compensation for this position may vary based on a number of individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and relevant education or training. The total compensation package may also include additional components such as bonus, equity, and benefits, which will be detailed upon offer of employment.
