Job description

Department: Facilities and Desk Services 
Position covered by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 1334

Initial Shift Assignment: Night - Midnight, Evening and Non-Traditional work week (Days off not Saturday or Sunday)

General Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Desk Services - Area Manager, the Residence Porter provides personal service to residence students or university visitors at the residence desk.  Porters provide daily residence facilities materials handling/movement function throughout the year. The Desk Operation is 24 hours, 7 days a week, and the Residence Porters' shifts and 40-hour weekly schedule is based the operational needs. Most Residence Porter Schedules are non-traditional hours, working weekends, afternoon or midnight shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities

Desk:

  • Information dissemination - provide information about Student Housing Services (SHS), the residence facilities, services available.
  • Referral Agent - direct clients to appropriate resources on campus to respond to their needs/problems/situation.
  • Work Orders Entry.
  • Dispatch Residence Life Staff to respond to situations.
  • Monitor status of exterior door alarms and secure buildings as required.
  • Ensure safety of the residence students and buildings - conduct rounds, check building security, report vandalism, etc.
  • Provide services at desks - student residence check-in/check-out; transfers, key sign out, equipment sign-out, etc.
  • Materials Handling - reset and room inventory, move furniture and equipment within the residence system.

Summer Conference/Desk Duties:

  • As above
  • Registration duties for summer accommodation guests - reservations, room assignment, and payment collection.
  • Anticipate needs of in-house clients and respond to concerns following established processes.
  • Reset furniture and ensure residences are ready for occupancy.
  • Move equipment and materials.
  • Liaise with other University service providers.
  • Operation of University vehicles required.

Facilities Materials handling:

  • Move equipment and materials.
  • Regular on campus mail runs.
  • Reset furniture and ensure residences are ready for occupancy.
  • Receive all materials and furnishings and disperse appropriately.
  • Audit buildings as requested by SHS.
  • Assist with appliance moving when required.
  • Operation of University vehicles required.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Full G Ontario Driver's License.
  • Completion of grade 12 or equivalent.
  • One year experience in a campus setting required.
  • Customer service and front-line experience.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Ability to lift and carry furniture, and stand for periods of time.
  • Availability to work non-traditional shifts such as late evenings and weekends.
