What is a chaser?

Chasers are professionals responsible for following up on outstanding payments or debts owed to an organization. They typically work within credit control or accounts receivable departments, contacting clients or customers by phone, email, or letter to remind them of overdue invoices and arrange payment. Chasers play a crucial role in maintaining healthy cash flow for businesses by ensuring that debts are collected promptly and efficiently. They may also negotiate payment plans, resolve disputes, and keep accurate records of all communications.

What are some common challenges chasers face when coordinating with accounts receivable teams?

One of the main challenges Chasers encounter is staying aligned with the accounts receivable team regarding overdue payments and customer communication. Chasers often need to follow up diligently on outstanding invoices, which requires effective collaboration to ensure all information is up-to-date and consistent. Miscommunication can lead to duplicate efforts or overlooked accounts, so regular check-ins and shared tracking tools are essential. Building rapport with both internal teams and clients also helps streamline the collections process and resolve disputes efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chaser in debt collection, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chaser in debt collection, you need strong negotiation skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of financial regulations, often supported by experience in credit control or collections. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software and debt recovery systems is typically required. Excellent communication, resilience, and problem-solving abilities help build rapport with clients and handle challenging situations effectively. These skills ensure positive collection outcomes, maintain compliance, and protect organizational reputation while minimizing losses.
