Character Design Internship information

What is a character design internship?

A Character Design Internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, where you gain hands-on experience creating and developing characters for animation, video games, comics, or other media. Interns typically work alongside professional character designers to learn industry techniques, contribute ideas, and build a portfolio. This role may involve sketching, digital illustration, storyboarding, and collaborating with other departments to bring characters to life. The internship is a valuable stepping stone for those looking to enter the creative industry as a character designer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a character design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Character Design Intern, you need strong drawing and illustration skills, a portfolio showcasing original character concepts, and preferably coursework or a degree in art, animation, or a related field. Familiarity with digital illustration tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Procreate is typically expected. Creativity, adaptability, and effective communication help you collaborate with team members and bring unique ideas to life. These skills ensure you can create compelling characters that align with project goals and resonate with audiences.

What are some common challenges faced during a character design internship, and how can I overcome them?

One common challenge in a Character Design Internship is balancing creative expression with adhering to existing brand guidelines or client feedback. Interns often need to revise their designs multiple times to align with the artistic vision of a project or studio. Collaboration and open communication with art directors and other team members are essential for success. To overcome these challenges, be receptive to feedback, stay organized, and actively seek mentorship from experienced designers within the team.

What is the difference between Character Design Internship vs Character Artist?

AspectCharacter Design InternshipCharacter Artist
Required CredentialsPortfolio, relevant coursework or degree, basic software skillsAdvanced portfolio, professional experience, specialized software skills
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, entry-level projects, mentorshipFull-time or freelance projects, studio or remote work
Industry UsageInternship programs in animation, gaming, or entertainmentProfessional character creation for games, films, or animation

While both roles involve character creation, a Character Design Internship is an entry-level position focused on learning and assisting in character development, often within internship programs. A Character Artist is a professional with more experience, responsible for creating detailed, polished character models for various media. Internships serve as a stepping stone toward becoming a full-fledged Character Artist.

Job description

Who we are

Neros is a defense technology company rebuilding America's drone industrial base. We design and manufacture high-performance unmanned systems that are tested in combat, iterated at startup speed, and built at massive scale. Our team culture is fast, hands-on, and obsessed with closing the gap between design and deployment.

As drones transform the character of warfare, Neros is delivering the systems the West needs to compete on the modern battlefield and deter the adversaries of democracy. We're hiring engineers, operators, and builders who want to move fast, take on extreme ownership, and get capability into the hands of warfighters in months, not years.

What you will be doing

As an RF Engineer at Neros you will play a crucial, hands-on role in developing next-generation wireless products. In this position, you'll support senior engineers through the entire hardware lifecycle, from initial design to final testing. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated engineer to grow their skills in a collaborative environment while working on cutting-edge technology.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design and simulation of RF circuits, including matching networks, filters, and amplifiers
  • Build, tune, and characterize RF prototypes to validate design performance
  • Conduct critical RF measurements and testing using lab equipment like Vector Network Analyzers (VNAs), spectrum analyzers, and signal generators
  • Perform root cause analysis on production failures to identify and resolve potential design issues
  • Assemble test setups and execute verification and validation test plans
  • Collaborate with firmware and other engineering teams to support system integration and testing

You should have the following

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or a related technical field. 0-2 Years experience
  • Solid understanding of fundamental RF and electromagnetic concepts
  • Hands-on experience with standard RF laboratory equipment is required
  • Proficient soldering skills, with experience handling small surface-mount RF components
  • Ability to select components to meet RF system specifications

Nice to have

  • Previous Experience: An internship, co-op, or significant university project in an RF or wireless hardware role
  • Scripting Skills:ย Experience automating tests or analyzing data usingย Pythonย orย MATLAB
  • Layout Familiarity: Basic understanding of PCB layout principles for RF circuits using tools like Altium Designer
  • Protocol Knowledge: Familiarity with specific wireless communication protocols such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, or cellular standards
  • Hobbyist Interest: Personal projects or an active interest in areas like amateur radio (ham radio), software-defined radio (SDR), or electronics projects

US Salary Range

$80,000 - $150,000 USD

The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only. Actual salary may vary based on (but not limited to) work experience, education and/or training, critical skills, and/or business considerations. Highly competitive equity grants are considered part of Neros' total compensation package.

We're an equal opportunity employer. We welcome all applicants without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.
