Job description

Position Summary...As Senior Director, Merchandising – Furniture (D71), you will lead one of Walmart's most strategically significant and transformative commercial opportunities. Furniture is one of the most compelling growth opportunities in General Merchandise. In a category navigating significant industry headwinds, your mission is to build the strategy, the team, and the ecosystem that transforms Walmart into the undisputed destination for furniture customers.
You will lead a portfolio of Director-level leaders responsible for business development, strategic partnerships, premium assortment, last mile solutions, and innovative store experience – driving a unified strategy that connects world-class store execution with digital acceleration, marketplace growth, and the kind of supplier relationships that no competitor can replicate. What you'll do...
  • Setting strategic direction: Owning the multi-year vision transformation plan for D71 Furniture, aligned to Walmart's corporate priorities and the real opportunity the market presents.
  • Building the partner ecosystem: Owning executive-level relationships with major strategic partners – 3rd party retailers, last-mile providers, brand partners, and marketplace sellers.
  • Leading a high-performing team: Managing, developing, and inspiring a portfolio of Director-level leaders, along with their direct reports.
  • Driving omni-channel growth: Integrating digital acceleration (SEO, CVR, PDP quality, site experience), store experience, and marketplace strategy into a connected growth engine that drives sales growth, profitability, market share, and a seamless customer experience across all channels.
  • Championing cross-functional alignment: Partnering with technology, marketing, supply chain, site merchandising, Sam's Club, and global sourcing to unlock sustainable share gains.
  • Raising the bar on culture: Building a team culture grounded in customer obsession, data-driven decision-making, accountability, and continuous transformation.
  • Delivering Executional Excellence & Agility: Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail environment, driving alignment, accountability, and flawless execution across channels and teams.
  • Utilizing Customer & Trend Acumen: Deep understanding of customer behavior, trends, and competitive dynamics, with the ability to translate insights into compelling assortments and category strategies.
  • Applying Analytical & Financial Expertise: Proven ability to leverage data, financial metrics, and business insights to identify opportunities, manage performance, and make informed merchandising decisions.
You'll Sweep Us Off Our Feet If…
  • You are a bold, visionary leader who treats industry disruption as an invitation. The furniture industry is declining – you see market share waiting to be taken.
  • You think beyond traditional buying. You understand that the future of furniture retail is built on partnerships, digital platforms, and experience – along with assortment and price.
  • You are data and digitally savvy: you build cultures that make decisions from data, anticipate customer behavior, and relentlessly improve performance across digital, store, and omni-channel.
  • You are a relationship builder who earns trust at the executive level – with suppliers, 3rd party partners, internal product and tech teams, and senior Walmart leadership.
  • You lead without silos: you connect store, site, marketplace, last mile, and brand strategy into a coherent, customer-first point of view and you build teams that think the same way.
  • You develop people: you invest in the careers of your direct reports and create an environment where merchants become the best versions of themselves.
  • You are tenacious, competitive, and energized by building things that have never been built before.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 10+ years of merchandising, retail, or related commercial leadership experience.
  • 3+ years leading a team of Directors or senior-level leaders in a complex, multi-category retail environment.
  • Demonstrated track record of building and executing commercial strategy at scale.
  • Experience with omni-channel retail, digital merchandising, and/or marketplace platforms.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in P&L ownership, forecasting, and gap planning.
  • Executive communication skills with the ability to influence at the VP and C-suite level.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in home furnishings, hardlines, or large-parcel retail categories.
  • Background in business development, strategic partnerships, or platform/marketplace models.
  • Familiarity with lifecycle management, supply chain strategy, or global sourcing.
  • Track record of building new organizational capabilities within a large enterprise.
