What is a challenger?

A Challenger is typically someone who competes in a contest or strives to overcome a reigning champion in a specific field, such as sports, business, or other competitive arenas. In the workplace, the term 'Challenger' may also refer to individuals who question the status quo, seek innovation, and push organizations or teams to achieve better results. In some contexts, 'Challenger' can refer to a specific job role focused on driving change and challenging existing processes. The exact responsibilities and qualifications of a Challenger vary depending on the industry and organization. Challengers are valued for their critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to inspire progress.

What are some common challenges faced by challenger sales representatives, and how can they overcome them?

Challenger Sales Representatives often face the challenge of pushing clients out of their comfort zones by introducing new perspectives and solutions. This approach can sometimes lead to initial resistance or skepticism from clients who are accustomed to traditional sales methods. To overcome these challenges, successful Challengers invest time in understanding their clients’ businesses, tailor their insights to address specific pain points, and build credibility through thorough research and confident communication. Collaborating closely with product and marketing teams can also help them stay informed and deliver value-driven conversations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a challenger sales representative, and why are they important?

To excel as a Challenger Sales Representative, you need strong consultative selling skills, deep market and product knowledge, and typically a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, sales analytics tools, and sometimes sales certifications such as Challenger Sales Model training are commonly required. Excellent communication, resilience, and the ability to teach, tailor, and take control of sales conversations set top performers apart. These skills and qualities are essential because they enable reps to challenge customer thinking, provide tailored solutions, and drive high-value sales in competitive markets.

Job description

Job Title: Partner Activation Specialist – Sales Team
Location: Denver, CO (In-House)
Company: Direct Sign Wholesale
Type: Full-Time
Compensation: Base (50k) + Uncapped Commission (25k-100k+): Position includes performance accelerators, growth opportunities, and travel perks.
About Us
At Direct Sign Wholesale (DSW), we help sign shops across North America eliminate chaos and scale with confidence. Our guarantee — “No Surprises. No Flack.” — defines how we operate: clear, consistent, and accountable from quote to crate.
We’re identified as the leanest + most efficient wholesale channel letter manufacturer in the U.S., but our culture is fast, fun, and focused — we act like a startup that knows what it’s doing. Our Partner Development Group is the heartbeat of that growth, and we’re adding a new kind of SALES PRO who thrives on connection, creativity, and follow-through.
The Role
We’re looking for a Partner Activation Specialist — someone who can turn cold into curious and curious into committed.
You’ll focus exclusively on:
  1. Reactivating dormant partners who’ve gone quiet.
  2. Igniting sign shops that have quoted before but never ordered.
  3. Following up on active quotes to negotiate and close.
You’ll work in-house at our Denver HQ, learning directly from our production and estimating teams so you can speak confidently about what we build and how we do it.
You’ll also get out of the office — attending tradeshows, partner visits, and industry events to connect with customers on their turf.
This role sits at the front line of DSW’s growth, driving engagement with the sign shops who keep small businesses visible and vibrant.
What You’ll Do:
  • Reconnect with inactive or low-engagement partners through persistent, personalized outreach.
  • Manage and follow up on active quotes to move them from “pending” to “approved.”
  • Collaborate daily with Estimators during active quoting stages.
  • Use HubSpot CRM to track conversations and opportunities — but also reach beyond it through LinkedIn, social media, associations, and trade networks.
  • Build your own rhythm of outreach, testing creative ways to get decision-makers to respond.
  • Share feedback from the field to help evolve and improve our sales process.

Represent DSW’s core values: Decisive, Collaborative, Attentive, Energetic, Willing, Flexible, Curious.
Who You Are
  1. A connector who can read people quickly and communicate with purpose.
  2. Competitive and self-motivated — you set a high bar and chase it.
  3. Creative with outreach and fearless in follow-up.
  4. Comfortable in an evolving system — you like helping build the process, not just follow it.
  5. Emotionally intelligent and quick to pick up on tone and timing.
  6. Energized by in-person collaboration and proud to represent your team on the road.

Bonus Points For:
  • B2B sales experience, ideally in manufacturing or signage.
  • Familiarity with HubSpot, ZoomInfo, and modern sales tools.
  • Background in consultative or challenger-style selling.
Compensation
  • Competitive base + uncapped commission.
We reward initiative, performance, and impact.
Why Join DSW
  • Work in-house at our Denver facility — see the craft, meet the makers, and understand what you sell.
  • Be part of a team rewriting how wholesale sales feel — approachable, proactive, and partner-first.
  • Travel to tradeshows and partner sites nationwide - 10-20% of your time
  • Collaborate directly with leadership to shape an evolving sales model.
Be recognized for your results — not just your time.
To Apply
Send your resume and a short message answering one question:
“What’s your most creative or memorable way you’ve reconnected with a cold lead?”
