Associate or Full Professor / Department Chair - Mathematics (Tenure-track)

The University of Texas Permian Basin Department of Mathematics welcomes applications for a tenure-track faculty member to serve as the Academic Department Chair for the Department at the Associate or Full Professor rank. UTPB offers a competitive salary and relocation expenses. The anticipated start date is August 2026. Priority will be given to applications received by January 10, 2026.

Essential Functions
  • Advocate for students, faculty, department goals, and programs.
  • Contribute through direct teaching, research/scholarship, and service; serve as a role model.
  • Have relevant administrative experience and a commitment to education and mentorship of students and faculty.
  • Be responsible for overall leadership, management, and administration of the department.
  • Pursue and achieve departmental excellence in teaching, research, and service.
  • Maintain an environment of collegiality and shared governance.
  • Provide leadership in ensuring relevant department curricula and obtaining/maintaining accreditation.
  • Supervise faculty and assure they perform all duties commensurate with their workload and assignments.
  • Work with faculty to develop and implement strategic initiatives and programming to help ensure student success.
  • Recruit, retain, evaluate, and promote faculty.
  • Develop with the faculty a series of short- and long-term goals for the department in harmony with the Universityโ€™s and Collegeโ€™s strategic plans.
  • Manage the department budget and other resources.
  • Address questions, complaints, grievances, and suggestions from faculty, staff, and students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the dean.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field.
  • Current academic rank of tenured associate or full professor.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated administrative skills.
  • Distinguished record of teaching, service, and research.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. College-level teaching experience, which may include teaching labs as a graduate student.
  2. Ability to teach in various areas of the program.
  3. Experience with students' academic mentoring.
Conditions of Employment

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance. Once hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three days of the hire date to establish their identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Employees must be able and willing to travel and perform duties away from campus as necessary and must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driverโ€™s license. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driverโ€™s record. Employment is contingent upon a successful background check.

Schedule

Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30โ€ฏโ€“โ€ฏ5:30โ€ฏpm; Friday, 8:00โ€ฏamโ€ฏโ€“โ€ฏ12:00โ€ฏpm with a oneโ€‘hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Faculty hours may differ based on class schedule and department need.

Standard Working Conditions
  • Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.
  • Physically able to remain seated frequently continuously.
  • Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.
  • Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.
