Job description

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Fire Investigator based in the greater Dallas area to support complex origin and cause investigations in a full‑time, remote role.

The position is ideal for a self‑directed professional who values technical rigor, clear communication, and teamwork while delivering unbiased, defensible findings. Candidates preferably live within 50 miles of Dallas, TX.

Certification: IAAI‑CFI is strongly preferred, with NAFI‑CFEI required at minimum.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate assigned claims suspected of insurance fraud, including large loss, large fire loss, and multiple claims.
  • Conduct extensive and detailed investigations to determine the origin and cause of fires and explosions, primarily involving structures and commercial or residential buildings.
  • Ensure that assigned cases are investigated and reported back to the requesting party in adherence to best practices and industry standards.
  • Anticipate training needs of customers based on exposure and antifraud initiatives.
  • Investigate site and provide expert testimony based on determination of the origin and cause of fires, presenting findings concisely in depositions and trials.
  • Maintain assigned claims files confidentially; document all relevant facts in the appropriate claims handling system; keep management informed of developments impacting claims results.
  • Review and make recommendations on outcomes of investigations in a prompt and expeditious manner.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to claims leadership and associates on claims resolution.
  • Develop and maintain rapport and cooperation with federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as private information bureaus that can assist in investigative efforts.
  • Identify and interview all witnesses or involved persons who may possess information or evidence pertinent to incident under investigation.
  • Independently conclude investigations and determine negligence and violation of laws.
  • Exercise knowledge and expertise required for thorough inspection of available public records, including land deeds, mortgages, liens, suits, judgments, marriage and divorce records, etc., while ensuring investigations are conducted legally and ethically.
  • Provide investigative guidance to Fire Investigator team members as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, support the organization’s quality program(s), and travel as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • IAAI Certified Fire Investigator (IAAI-CFI) certification is preferred.
  • Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator (CFEI) certification is the minimum requirement.
  • Five (5) years of fire investigation experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Environment
  • Physical: Must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods, kneel, squat or bend, work outdoors in hot or cold weather, climb, crawl, stoop, kneel, reach overhead, lift or carry up to 50 pounds, push or pull up to 100 pounds, drive up to 4 hours per day.
  • Mental: Clear conceptual thinking, excellent judgment and discretion, ability to handle work‑related stress, handle multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Auditory/Visual: Adequate hearing, vision, and speaking ability.
