This position performs activities related to the enforcement of various city ordinances. This position is required to supervise and manage field investigations involving violations of the Municipal Code and attempts to collaborate with residents to achieve voluntary compliance. When necessary, the incumbent of this position works with the City Attorney to issue uniform infraction citations and serve as the representative of the City in Municipal Court.
Examples Of Duties / Knowledge & SkillsThe essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following duties. Additional essential functions may be identified by the City of Ridgeland and listed as such in the incumbent's performance appraisal elements. Various tasks may be assigned under each essential function. Those that are listed under the examples of work are not all inclusive; they are examples only and may be amended or added to as needed by the City of Ridgeland.
Patrol the municipal boundaries of the city and investigate city code violations including cleaning of private property, sign ordinance violations, overgrown lots, abandoned vehicles, dilapidated structures, and zoning violations and recommended corrective actions to bring about compliance. Determine time frame for compliance achievement and issue notices of violations and citations. Receive complaints and prioritize magnitude of issues; log in and track complaints on computer, research and make determination of appropriate codes to address compliance; prepare appropriate compliance letters; work closely with citizens to achieve voluntary compliance following due process procedures. Perform follow-up inspections. Communicate regularly and work closely with related departments including Fire, Parks, Police and Public Works to determine appropriate responsibility for complaints. Maintain computerized records and establish sufficient background information to proceed with legal action if necessary. Issue infraction citation and complaints and prepare documentation and evidence to support charge in Municipal Court. Assist City Attorney in preparing cases where defendants are represented by an attorney. Maintain current knowledge of code requirements and related City ordinances. Perform related duties as assigned.
