How much do cern engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for cern engineering in the United States is $146,868.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $116,500.00 and $173,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CERN Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CERN Engineer, you need a strong background in physics, engineering principles, and mathematics, typically supported by an advanced degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with specialized software (such as CAD, LabVIEW, or simulation tools), particle accelerator systems, and relevant safety certifications is vital. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and clear communication skills help engineers excel in multi-disciplinary, international project environments. These skills ensure efficient collaboration, innovation, and the safe advancement of complex scientific research at CERN.

Can engineers work at CERN?

Yes, engineers can work at CERN in various roles such as accelerator, electrical, mechanical, and software engineering. These positions often require relevant technical degrees, experience, and familiarity with scientific equipment and research environments.

What are CERN engineers?

CERN engineers are professionals who design, develop, operate, and maintain the complex scientific instruments and infrastructure used at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. They work across various fields such as mechanical, electrical, civil, and software engineering to support high-energy physics experiments, including the Large Hadron Collider. Their work ensures that cutting-edge research in particle physics is possible, often involving collaboration with scientists from around the world.

What is the difference between Cern Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectCern EngineeringMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, specialized training in particle physics or accelerator systemsBachelor's or higher in mechanical engineering, professional engineering license often preferred
Work EnvironmentResearch facilities, laboratories, large-scale scientific projects at CERNManufacturing plants, design offices, industrial settings
Industry UsagePrimarily in high-energy physics research and particle acceleratorsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy sectors
Common Search & ComparisonYesNo

While Cern Engineering focuses on designing and maintaining particle accelerators and research equipment at CERN, Mechanical Engineering covers a broader range of industries including manufacturing and automotive. Both roles require strong engineering fundamentals, but Cern Engineering emphasizes specialized knowledge in physics-related systems within research environments.

What are some unique challenges engineers face when working at CERN, and how do they typically overcome them?

Engineers at CERN often tackle unprecedented technical challenges due to the complexity and scale of particle physics experiments. They must design, build, and maintain highly specialized equipment that operates under extreme conditions, such as ultra-high vacuum and cryogenic temperatures. Collaboration across diverse, international teams is essential, and regular communication helps solve problems efficiently. Adaptability and continuous learning are also key, as technologies and project requirements can evolve rapidly.

How much do CERN engineers get paid?

CERN engineers' salaries vary based on experience, role, and contract type, but typically range from approximately €4,000 to €8,000 per month for full-time positions. Salaries are aligned with international standards for scientific and technical staff and often include benefits such as health insurance and pension contributions.

What are the career opportunities at CERN?

CERN offers a wide range of career opportunities including roles in engineering, physics, IT, administration, and technical support. Positions often require relevant degrees, technical skills, and experience with scientific tools and research environments. Opportunities are available for both early-career professionals and experienced specialists, with roles in research projects, technical development, and operational support.

What qualifications do I need to work at CERN?

To work at CERN as an engineer, you typically need a relevant university degree in engineering, physics, or a related field, along with strong technical skills and experience in scientific research or technical environments. Advanced degrees such as a master's or doctorate are often preferred for specialized roles, and knowledge of programming, data analysis, or instrumentation can be advantageous.

Job description

About Us:

At Parafin, we’re on a mission to grow small businesses.
Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, but traditional banks often don’t have their backs. We build tech that makes it simple for small businesses to access the financial tools they need through the platforms they already sell on.
We partner with companies like DoorDash, Amazon, Worldpay, and Mindbody to offer fast and flexible funding, spend management, and savings tools to their small business users via a simple integration. Parafin takes on all the complexity of capital markets, underwriting, servicing, compliance, and customer service for our partners.
We’re a tight-knit team of innovators hailing from Stripe, Square, Plaid, Coinbase, Robinhood, CERN, and more — all united by a passion for building tools that help small businesses succeed. Parafin is backed by prominent venture capitalists including GIC, Notable Capital, Redpoint Ventures, Ribbit Capital, and Thrive Capital. Parafin is a Series C company, and we have raised more than $194M in equity and $340M in debt facilities.
Join us in creating a future where every small business has the financial tools they need.

About the Position

We're looking for a software engineer to join our Product Engineering team in San Francisco. Our team owns the end-to-end experience across Parafin's financial products, from the UI layer down to the APIs and services that power it. You'll work across Design, Product, and Engineering to build high-quality user-facing products.

As a Senior Product Engineer, you'll own large product areas end-to-end, from scoping projects to making technical decisions and driving outcomes. You'll have a direct hand in shaping what we build and how it’s built.

What You’ll Do
  • Ship polished user experiences and own the APIs, data models, and backend services behind them. Care about the details that matter, like performance, reliability, and responsiveness.

  • Develop strong product context and use it to shape what we build. Partner with Product and Design to inform roadmap decisions and improve the user experience, not just execute on specs.

  • Make sound technical decisions and contribute to architecture and design. Participate in design reviews and collaborate with Engineering to align on tradeoffs.

  • Improve code quality, systems, and team processes. Mentor other engineers and help foster a culture of craft and ownership.

What We’re Looking For
  • 5+ years of experience building and shipping user-facing products, with experience owning projects end-to-end and driving them from scoping through execution.

  • Comfortable working across the stack and going deep where needed. You’ve built production-quality UIs in React and have experience building APIs, working with databases, and debugging backend systems.

  • You care deeply about user experience and can reason about what makes one UX better than another. You think through edge cases when data is missing or when users do something unexpected.

  • You are opinionated about how software should be built and contribute to abstractions, architecture, and patterns that make the product easier to develop and maintain.

  • You’re a strong cross-functional collaborator who works effectively with Engineering, Product, and Design to drive projects forward, align on tradeoffs, and deliver high-quality outcomes.

What We Offer:
  • Salary Range: $230k - $265k

  • Equity grant

  • Medical, dental & vision insurance

  • Work from home flexibility

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Commuter benefits

  • Free lunches

  • Paid parental leave

  • 401(k)

  • Employee assistance program

If you require reasonable accommodation in completing this application, interviewing, completing any pre-employment testing, or otherwise participating in the employee selection process, please contact us.
