Overview
VTG is seeking a Staff II DevOps Engineer to support our team in Manassas, VA. Dozens of Navy tactical systems ranging between legacy software installed on bare metal to micro-containers running in an on-premise cloud need to be delivered, installed, integrated and tested rapidly and securely. This DevOps role will work to automate the delivery, installation, integration, and testing of Navy tactical software.
The Staff II DevOps Engineer will work with a small team based out of Manassas, VA, but will also be responsible for collaborating with a larger community of organizations and government representatives from across the country. The individual will work with limited supervision to develop and implement commercial and/or open-source solutions for inclusion in future tactical systems. This role requires an imaginative thinker and problem solver with demonstrated interest in all aspects of DevOps infrastructure.
What will you do?
The Staff II DevOps Engineer will work with many new technologies to further advance the capabilities of the Navy combat system. This work will include development of CI/CD pipelines, cybersecurity analysis solutions, and automated tests to automate the delivery, installation, integration, and testing of Navy tactical software. Additional work could also include prototyping efforts that span a broad spectrum of computer technologies, including server, VM and container management, cybersecurity, data architecture, and networks.
  • Lead a small team of junior DevOps engineers
  • Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines, PaaS, PaaS Services, Automated Tests, Data Architecture solutions, etc..
  • Evaluate commercial and open-source products for use in CI/CD pipelines and in a PaaS
  • Integrate 3rd party applications
  • Conceive, develop, and evaluate novel engineering solutions to address the unique requirements of the maritime environment
  • Participate in cross-domain working groups to coordinate prototyping efforts and brief results to senior engineers
  • Provide and update technical documentation for all work performed.

Do you have what it takes?
Required Qualifications:
  • 6+ years of experience as a DevOps engineer (or similar role)
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Information Technology, (or similar degree)
  • Extensive experience using Linux (RHEL/Centos 7, 8, 9)
  • Experience with CI/CD tools and frameworks (GitLab, Runners, Python, Ansible, Rook/Ceph)
  • Extensive experience with shell scripting languages (Bash, etc.)
  • Experience with modern PaaS environment tools such as Kubernetes, Proxmox, and/or Helm
  • Experience developing containers and using related tools such as Podman
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Initiative, innovation, and resourcefulness.
  • US Citizen with current SECRET Clearance or ability to obtain a SECRET clearance
  • Successful completion of background check

Desired Qualifications/Skills/Abilities:
  • Extensive experience as a Linux administrator
  • Experience developing software with Python
  • Networking experience - switch configurations with Arista switches and troubleshooting experience with VLANs
  • Experience with Monitoring tools (Prometheus/Grafana, etc)
  • Experience with Automated Testing
  • Mentoring and team leadership skills

VTG's estimated starting pay range is $130,000-$140,000 which is a general guideline for the geographic location. When extending an offer, VTG also considers work experience, education, skill level, market considerations and may possibly include contractual requirements which may cause an offer to fall outside of this range.
