What is the difference between Ceph Storage Administrator vs Storage Engineer?

AspectCeph Storage AdministratorStorage Engineer
CertificationsCeph certifications, Linux certificationsStorage-specific certifications, Linux certifications
Work EnvironmentData centers, cloud environments, Linux-based systemsData centers, enterprise storage solutions, cloud platforms
Industry UsageOpen-source storage solutions, cloud providers, tech companiesEnterprise IT, cloud services, data management

The Ceph Storage Administrator specializes in managing and maintaining Ceph storage clusters, focusing on open-source, Linux-based storage solutions. In contrast, the Storage Engineer has a broader role in designing and implementing various storage systems across different platforms. While both roles require Linux knowledge and storage certifications, the Ceph Storage Administrator is more specialized in Ceph technology, whereas the Storage Engineer covers a wider range of storage solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ceph Storage Administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ceph Storage Administrator, you need strong knowledge of distributed storage systems, Linux server administration, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Ceph command-line tools, monitoring systems like Prometheus, and relevant certifications such as Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to manage complex storage environments and collaborate with IT teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring data reliability, system performance, and seamless storage operations in enterprise settings.

What are Ceph Storage Administrators?

Ceph Storage Administrators are IT professionals responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Ceph storage clusters. They ensure the reliability, performance, and scalability of distributed storage systems that use Ceph, which is an open-source platform for object, block, and file storage. Their duties often include monitoring cluster health, managing data replication, handling upgrades, and securing storage environments. Ceph Storage Administrators play a crucial role in supporting organizations that require large-scale, fault-tolerant storage solutions, such as cloud providers and enterprises.

What are some common challenges faced by Ceph Storage Administrators during cluster scaling and how can they be addressed?

Ceph Storage Administrators often encounter challenges with maintaining data balance, performance, and fault tolerance as clusters scale. Adding new nodes or storage devices can sometimes lead to uneven data distribution or increased recovery times if not managed carefully. To address these challenges, administrators should follow best practices such as regularly monitoring cluster health, using automation tools for deployment, and planning capacity increases in alignment with Ceph’s recommended ratios for OSDs, monitors, and placement groups. Collaborating closely with development and networking teams also helps to ensure that scaling does not impact application performance or availability.

Job Description:
Top skills:

  • At least one year experience with Ceph and the Ceph file system is required.
  • Advancedknowledge of Linux system administration and performance monitoring is required.
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, project management and technical problem solving skills. Ability to communicate technical information to a non-technical audience. Strong work ethic to collaborate as a group, but also can carry a project to its end with minimal direction on your own.

Position Summary:
Our Client is looking for a Senior Storage Engineer to assist with the implementation and operation of an on-premise Ceph storage cluster. Duties will include configuring services such as the Ceph file system and RADOS object gateway, investigating performance issues, and planning future hardware acquisition to grow the existing cluster.
Principal Duties:
The Universitys High Speed Research Network (HSRN) has provisioned an on-premise Ceph storage cluster to support a compute cluster, primarily by providing RADOS Block Device (RBD) volumes. We are now looking to expand this storage cluster to support further use cases by growing its capacity (currently at 12 petabytes) and offer storage to a wider audience. A critical component of this new offering is a Ceph distributed file system (CephFS) that will be mounted on Linux machines.
  • Assist with the deployment and configuration of CephFS
  • Monitor for issues and performance concerns with the file systems, clients, or the underlying infrastructure
  • Integrate Ceph with our backup solution
  • Advise and monitor the integration of the file system with HPC compute machines running Linux
  • Write documentation for the cluster and its setup both for internal use (for cluster administrators) and external use (for our end-users, the researchers using the file system for various research activities)
  • Analyze researchers use cases and help them adjust their workflow or tune the system towards their goals

  • Experience with programming languages such as C, C++, Golang, Rust is desirable.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and CSI plugins is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the Prometheus/Grafana monitoring stack is a plus.
