Job description

Position Title:
Laborer - Cemetery (PT)

The Provo City Parks & Recreation Department is looking for a part-time laborer to work in the Cemetery year-round.
This position involves maintaining the cemetery in all weather conditions and using a variety of tools and equipment to provide upkeep. Qualified, civic-minded individuals interested in supporting the services provided to Provo residents by the cemetery are encouraged to apply.

What is the compensation?
Pay Rate: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour (depending on qualifications)
Part-time Provo City employees are eligible to contribute to individual retirement savings plans through the City (401k, 457, Roth IRA, and/or Traditional IRA) and receive the following great perks: a) free admission to the Provo Recreation Center, Peaks Ice Arena Public Skating, and Provo Shooting Sports Park; b) a free Provo City Library Card; c) a 25% discount on Provo Recreation Center memberships (direct family only); and d) discounts from various local and national vendors.
What are the main duties?
  • Mow grounds by hand or with power mowers.
  • Use power string trimmers.
  • Install and maintain sprinkler systems, including affixing and setting sprinkler heads.
  • Assist in maintaining shrubs and flower beds.
  • Perform general construction and maintenance work on buildings in the cemetery, itself, including plumbing and painting
  • Operate heavy equipment, such as trucks and specialized cemetery maintenance equipment.
  • Use various hand and power tools in performance of heavy manual labor.
  • Maintain tools and equipment and perform other related duties as required.

What do I need to apply?
  • Any training or experience that demonstrates an ability to perform the work.
  • Applicant must have the following: physical strength and agility to perform the work, ability to follow directions and communicate with the public in a courteous manner, and a knowledge of the safe use of hand tools and equipment required by the position.

What are the hours?
Approximately 25 hours per week, Monday - Saturdays. Exact schedule will be discussed in the interview and schedule is subject to change.
What are the physical environmental factors?
Applicant will be required to work in adverse weather conditions and in high noise levels; and perform the following: bending; carrying; lifting heavy objects; loading; and digging trenches, holes, and other excavations.
What is the selection process?
This position is open until filled and will be closed when sufficient, qualified applications to proceed with a competitive selection process have been received (at least seven days). Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.
If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
