How much do cell saver jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for cell saver in the United States is $21.64, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.83 and $27.16 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Cell Saver position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cell Saver, you need a solid understanding of surgical procedures, physiology, and sterile technique, typically supported by a background in healthcare such as a surgical technologist or respiratory therapist credential. Proficiency in operating intraoperative autotransfusion devices, following manufacturer protocols, and often certification through organizations like the International Board of Blood Management (IBBM) is important. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and communication skills stand out in this field. Mastery of these abilities ensures blood is safely collected, processed, and returned to patients during surgery, supporting patient outcomes and surgical team workflow.

What is a Cell Saver job?

A Cell Saver job involves operating a specialized machine to collect, process, and reinfuse a patient's own blood during surgery to minimize blood loss and reduce the need for transfusions. Cell Saver technicians or perfusionists work in hospitals and surgical centers, assisting during procedures where significant bleeding is expected. Their role helps improve patient recovery by preserving their natural blood supply and reducing risks associated with donor blood transfusions.

What does a typical workday look like for a Cell Saver in a hospital setting?

On a typical day, a Cell Saver sets up specialized equipment in the operating room, collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff to facilitate blood collection, and processes and returns autologous blood to the patient during surgical procedures. The role often involves being on-call and responding quickly to operative needs, especially in trauma or cardiac cases requiring rapid blood management. You’ll also be responsible for maintaining and calibrating equipment, documenting transfusion data accurately, and ensuring all protocols for patient safety are strictly followed. The work environment is dynamic and fast-paced, making adaptability and effective communication key to successful collaboration within the surgical team.
