What is a CDN engineer?

CDN Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, and manage Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to optimize the delivery of digital content such as websites, videos, and applications. They ensure fast, reliable, and secure content delivery to users by strategically distributing servers across different locations. CDN Engineers also handle performance tuning, troubleshooting, and security measures to minimize latency and downtime. Their role is crucial for businesses that serve content to a global audience and require high availability and scalability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CDN engineer?

To thrive as a CDN Engineer, you need expertise in network protocols, web security, content delivery concepts, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with CDN platforms (like Akamai, Cloudflare, or AWS CloudFront), scripting languages, and monitoring tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in optimizing performance and collaborating across teams. These skills are essential for ensuring fast, secure, and reliable delivery of digital content to users worldwide.

What are some common challenges faced by CDN engineers in ensuring optimal content delivery performance?

CDN Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing latency, load distribution, and security while managing a globally distributed network. They must proactively monitor for outages, optimize caching strategies, and troubleshoot issues related to content propagation and edge server performance. Additionally, staying updated with the latest CDN technologies and collaborating with developers, DevOps, and security teams is essential to address evolving demands and maintain high availability for end-users.

What is the difference between Cdn Engineer vs Network Engineer?

The Content Delivery Network (CDN) Platform Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, and operational reliability of enterprise CDN platforms supporting large-scale, customer-facing digital applications. This role drives the delivery of secure and highly available content by managing CDN configurations, caching strategies, traffic routing, and edge security controls across distributed environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical owner and subject matter expert for CDN technologies, partnering with applications, network, and security teams to implement scalable solutions, build self-service capabilities within an internal developer portal, execute complex global migrations, and enforce enterprise standards.
  • Lead the technical transformation of the global content delivery strategy and the newly formed Content Delivery Network (CDN) Center of Excellence (CoE), shifting from a vendor-managed legacy model to a modern, automated, Multi-CDN ecosystem.
  • Lead technical root-cause analysis (RCA) for high-priority production incidents, participate in on-call rotations, and build automated remediation scripts to prevent repeat issues.
  • Maintain high system reliability through proactive monitoring and incident prevention. Establish and track CDN-specific SLOs/SLAs and implement alerting and proactive remediation.
  • Evaluate emerging CDN technologies, tools, and performance optimization techniques.
  • Serve as an active mentor and trainer to upskill internal systems and automation engineers. Develop internal documentation, playbooks, and training materials to elevate team capabilities.

Skills Required

  • SaaS

Skills Preferred

  • Content Management

Experience Required

  • 5+ years of experience managing enterprise CDN platforms, including Akamai, Cloudflare, Fastly, or Google Cloud CDN.
  • Deep understanding of DNS, GTM, CNAME chaining, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3, TLS/SSL, caching headers, and edge computing.
  • Multi-CDN Strategy & Implementation: Directly configure, deploy, and maintain landing zones and properties across Akamai, Cloudflare, Google Media CDN, GCP Cloud CDN, and Fastly, matching application workloads to fit-for-purpose CDN tiers.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Develop modular, production-grade Terraform configurations and Ansible playbooks to automate CDN provisioning, origin mappings, WAF rules, and Bot Management policies, eliminating manual vendor UI updates.
  • Self-Service Tooling & Portal Integration: Build API-driven self-service capabilities and custom plugins for an internal developer portal built on Backstage. Write front-end web components in React and backend APIs in Python (FastAPI/Flask) or Java to allow application teams to self-provision CDN properties and cache purges.
  • CI/CD Pipelines & API Security: Build and maintain declarative GitOps deployment pipelines using Tekton (Pipeline-as-Code) and GitHub Actions. Publish management APIs via Apigee, ensuring compliance with OpenAPI standards and 42Crunch security scans.
  • Observability & Telemetry: Build telemetry pipelines and centralized dashboards using Splunk, Dynatrace, and Grafana to provide real-time visibility into global traffic, security events, and “Offload” efficiency.

Experience Preferred

  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), specifically:
    1. GCP Cloud Run
    2. GCP Transcoder API
    3. GCP OpenShift/GKE clusters
  • CMS/AEM Integration: Experience configuring CDN layers in front of Adobe Experience Manager (AEM/AEMaaCS).
