Cdl Rigger information

What is a CDL rigger?

CDL Riggers are skilled professionals who operate heavy machinery and vehicles, such as cranes and trucks, to move, lift, and transport large or heavy loads. They hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and are trained in rigging techniques to ensure loads are secured and moved safely. Their work is essential in construction, manufacturing, and other industries that require the transportation of oversized or heavy equipment. CDL Riggers must follow strict safety protocols and often work as part of a team to coordinate complex lifting and transport operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a CDL rigger?

To thrive as a CDL Rigger, you need a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), knowledge of rigging techniques, and experience with heavy equipment operation and load securement. Familiarity with rigging hardware, load charts, and OSHA safety protocols, along with certifications like NCCCO or Rigging and Signalperson credentials, are typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help ensure safe and efficient operations on job sites. These skills and qualifications are vital to prevent accidents, maintain compliance, and ensure successful completion of lifting and transport tasks.

What challenges do CDL riggers face when coordinating heavy equipment moves on job sites?

CDL Riggers often encounter challenges such as navigating tight spaces, ensuring proper load securement, and maintaining constant communication with other crew members to execute safe lifts and transports. The role requires a strong understanding of rigging techniques, safety protocols, and the ability to quickly adapt to changing site conditions. Effective collaboration with crane operators, site supervisors, and other trades is essential to ensure that all equipment moves are completed efficiently and without incident.

What is the difference between Cdl Rigger vs Crane Operator?

Industry UsageConstruction, shipping, industrial projectsConstruction, shipping, infrastructure projects

Both Cdl Rigger and Crane Operator roles often require CDL licenses and work in construction or industrial environments. While riggers focus on attaching loads and ensuring safety during lifting, crane operators handle the operation of cranes. These roles are complementary and often work together on the same projects, but their specific skills and certifications differ slightly.

Drivers typically transport cargo and/or crane attachments; inspect trucks for safety, looking for malfunctioning parts; inspect cargo to ensure that it is loaded correctly; and review shipping documents. They also must know where to attach the hooks, chains, and cables to lift a load safely. In some cases, riggers build equipment around the object to be moved, such as a tower or boom. While the object is being lifted, riggers use hand signals and other means to direct crane operators and help guide the objects into place. Crane operators operate traveling or stationary overhead crane (cab- or ground controlled) to lift, move, and position loads, such as machinery, equipment, products, and solid or bulk materials, using hoisting attachments such as hook, sling, electromagnet, or bucket.
