What is a CDC?

CDC jobs refer to employment opportunities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a federal agency under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. These positions span a wide range of fields including public health, epidemiology, data analysis, laboratory science, policy, and administration. Working at the CDC involves helping to protect public health, conduct research, and respond to health emergencies in the United States and around the world. CDC employees play a critical role in disease prevention, health promotion, and preparedness for public health threats.

What collaborative opportunities are available for professionals working at the CDC?

At the CDC, professionals frequently collaborate with multidisciplinary teams that include epidemiologists, public health advisors, laboratory scientists, and policy experts. Cross-departmental projects are common, and staff often engage in interagency partnerships with local, state, and international public health organizations. These collaborations provide unique learning experiences, enhance problem-solving skills, and contribute to impactful public health outcomes. Additionally, opportunities for professional development and participation in high-profile research initiatives are regularly available.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CDC?

To thrive as a Communicable Disease Controller (CDC), you need a strong background in public health, epidemiology, and disease surveillance, often supported by a degree in public health or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools, case management systems, and relevant certifications such as Certified in Public Health (CPH) are commonly required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for investigating disease outbreaks and coordinating with stakeholders. These skills are vital for quickly identifying, containing, and preventing the spread of communicable diseases to protect public health.

What is the difference between Cdc vs Epidemiologist?

AspectCdcEpidemiologist
CredentialsPublic health degree, CDC-specific trainingPublic health or related degree, often with epidemiology focus
Work EnvironmentGovernment agency, public health settingsResearch institutions, government, healthcare organizations
Industry UsagePublic health, disease control, health policyResearch, disease investigation, data analysis

While the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is a federal agency focused on disease prevention and health promotion, an epidemiologist is a professional who studies disease patterns and causes. Many epidemiologists work within the CDC, but they also operate in various other settings. The CDC employs epidemiologists to implement public health initiatives, making the roles interconnected but distinct: CDC is an organization, whereas epidemiologist is a profession.

Job description

About InterDent

InterDent Service Corporation is a scaled, multi-state dental support organization (DSO) that provides centralized, non-clinical management and administrative services to affiliated dental practices. InterDent supports approximately 165 practices, employing 400+ dentists and more than 2,000 team members across eight states, operating under established regional brands including Gentle Dental.

In addition to its predominantly fee-for-service platform, InterDent operates Capitol Dental Care (CDC), a capitated, value-based care model in Oregon. CDC partners with Coordinated Care Organizations to deliver dental services under the Oregon Health Plan, with a long-standing focus on preventive care and improving oral and overall health outcomes for children and underserved populations since 1994.

Through centralized infrastructure, disciplined operating models, and shared services, InterDent enables clinicians to remain focused on patient care while the organization drives scale, consistency, and operational excellence across a complex, multi-payer, multi-market platform.

Our mission is simple and meaningful: provide exceptional, lifelong, integrated oral healthcare — making it accessible to every patient we serve, because we believe oral health is foundational to overall wellbeing. We do that by building teams that are clinically excellent, operationally sharp, and deeply committed to the communities they work in.

The Opportunity

This is a seat at the table for a people leader who wants to shape something — not just maintain it.

As CHRO, you will own the full people strategy for a complex, multi-brand, multi-state organization at a pivotal stage of growth. You'll work directly alongside the executive team to build the culture, structure, and talent engine that allows InterDent to become the employer of choice across every market we serve.

This role is based in Vancouver, WA or El Segundo, CA, with regular travel to the alternate location and occasional field travel across our network.

Key Responsibilities

  • People Strategy — Design and drive a comprehensive HR strategy aligned to InterDent's growth goals, brand portfolio, and workforce complexity across eight states.
  • Culture & Engagement — Shape the employee experience from onboarding to advancement, building a culture where people stay, grow, and deliver their best work.
  • Workforce Planning — Partner with operational leaders to anticipate talent needs across the business.
  • Total Rewards — Develop and continuously refine competitive compensation, benefits, and incentive programs that attract and retain top performers.
  • Employee Relations & Compliance — Maintain a proactive, best-practice ER environment that protects employees and the organization while keeping the business moving.
  • Organizational Design — Conduct regular assessments of structure, roles, and processes — and act on what you find.
  • HR Operations & Analytics — Establish KPIs, measure what matters, and use data to drive continuous improvement across all HR functions.
  • Executive Partnership — Serve as a trusted advisor to the C-Suite on workforce decisions, organizational changes, and people-related risk.

Experience

  • 15+ years of progressive HR leadership experience, including strategic, talent management, and/or business development scope
  • Demonstrated success building and leading HR teams across multiple functions: Employee Relations, Learning & Development, Compensation & Benefits, Compliance, and Communications
  • Experience developing enterprise-level HR strategy in direct partnership with C-Suite leadership
  • Healthcare or multi-site service industry experience strongly preferred

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred

Skills & Approach

  • A business-minded operator who understands that HR exists to make the organization better — not just more compliant
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to influence at all levels, from frontline teams to the board
  • Analytically driven: comfortable setting KPIs, reading the data, and making the case for change
  • Experienced change manager who can lead organizational transitions with clarity and care

Why InterDent

  • Established, stable organization with genuine growth momentum
  • Meaningful mission — accessible oral healthcare for underserved and everyday communities alike
  • Multi-brand platform offering complexity, variety, and real strategic influence
  • Direct access to executive leadership and decision-making
