Job description

Senior Tax Associate – State and Local Tax (SALT) Team

This role offers the opportunity to work with a diverse client base and contribute to the growth and success of our Grand Rapids, Michigan-based SALT practice. The position is available in Troy, Grand Rapids, Houston, Duluth, Rochester, Birmingham, Orlando, or Clarksville offices.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare or review state and local sales tax returns, personal property tax returns, C‑corporation, S‑corporation, and Partnership income returns
  • Conduct research and provide technical advice on state and local tax issues
  • Assist clients with state and local tax audits, including audit defense and negotiation
  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize state and local tax liabilities
  • Stay current on state and local tax laws and regulations and communicate changes to clients and team members
  • Research technical matters related to state and local tax
  • Mentor and train staff members, providing guidance and support in their professional development
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure comprehensive client service
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's and/or master’s degree in accounting, taxation, or a related field
  • CPA or CPA track preferred, but not required
  • 2 years of experience in state and local tax, preferably in a public accounting or consulting firm
  • Knowledge of state and local tax laws and regulations
  • Excellent, analytical, problem‑solving, and research skills, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and CCH Axcess/GoSystem Tax, Avalara/Vertext/TaxJar, or TaxScribe, as relevant
  • Located within commuting distance of one of the Michigan, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida or Tennessee offices.
