Hartley Outdoor Education Generalist Substitute Position
RESPONSIBLE TO: Program Director of Hartley Outdoor Education Center
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:
One (1) part-time, building substitute position. Days worked based on the Hartley school year schedule and organizational substitute needs. Variable hours; includes days, evenings, and overnight assignments.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Hartley Outdoor Education Center Generalist supports daily operations, overnight supervision, and the delivery of the recreation program at Hartley Outdoor Education Center. This role provides flexible, confidential, and mission-driven support across multiple functional areas, including educational programming, facilities operations, and administration. The Generalist plays a key role in ensuring a safe, engaging, and well-organized experience for students, staff, and visiting groups.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evening Recreation Substitute Support
  1. Assist in the delivery of evening outdoor recreation activities for students during evening programming on a substitute basis.
  2. Support materials preparation and group management for evening recreation.
  3. Facilitate assigned activities, ensuring alignment with program goals and safety standards.

Overnight Specialist Substitute Support
  1. Be on site and on call during the hours of 9 pm and 6 am on a substitute basis.
  2. Assist groups with after-hours emergencies, housekeeping needs, or student services.
  3. High level of decision-making authority and responsibility.
  4. Ability to handle diverse situations and changes in daily responsibilities.

Safety & Supervision
  • Follow all health, safety, and emergency procedures.
  • Support risk management practices in all program and operational activities.
  • Maintain appropriate supervision ratios and ensure student well-being at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and overnight shifts.
  3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  4. Ability to work independently in a self-directed environment.
  5. Demonstrated reliability, adaptability, and problem-solving skills.
  6. Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
  7. Willingness to receive training across multiple departments.
  8. Strong commitment to being punctual and reliable when needed.
  9. CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  10. Ability to work well with diverse groups of individuals.

Preferred
  1. Experience working with youth in an educational, recreational, or camp setting.
  2. Interest in outdoor education, environmental science, or experiential learning.
  3. Basic knowledge of facility operations or maintenance.

Physical Requirements
  1. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  2. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  3. Ability to stand, walk, and remain active for extended periods.

This position operates in both indoor and outdoor settings, including classrooms, recreation spaces, dining facilities, and natural environments. The role requires flexibility and a willingness to adapt to the dynamic needs of a residential outdoor education program.
