What is a Catia CAD designer?

A Catia CAD Designer is a professional who uses CATIA, a powerful 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software developed by Dassault Systèmes, to create, modify, and analyze detailed engineering designs. These designers are typically involved in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and industrial machinery, where precision and complex assemblies are required. Their job includes building 3D models, generating technical drawings, and collaborating with engineers to ensure designs meet all specifications and standards.

What is the difference between Catia Cad Designer vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectCatia Cad DesignerMechanical Drafter
Required CredentialsCAD certification, technical degreeDrafting certification, technical diploma
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firmsManufacturing plants, engineering departments
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, industrial designManufacturing, construction, mechanical systems

Both roles involve technical drafting and CAD software, but Catia Cad Designers focus on 3D modeling and complex design using Catia software, while Mechanical Drafters typically create detailed 2D drawings for manufacturing. The choice depends on the project scope and industry requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Catia CAD designer?

To thrive as a Catia CAD Designer, you need strong proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical or related engineering fields. Expertise in using CATIA software, knowledge of PLM systems, and sometimes certifications like Dassault Systèmes' CATIA certifications are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are critical soft skills for collaborating with engineering teams and translating concepts into precise designs. These skills ensure accurate, manufacturable designs and efficient project workflows in industries such as automotive and aerospace.

What are some common challenges Catia CAD designers face when working on collaborative engineering projects?

Catia CAD Designers often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, which can present challenges such as managing version control, ensuring design compatibility across different engineering domains, and integrating feedback from various stakeholders. Communication and coordination are key, as designers must align their work with project timelines and technical requirements set by engineers, manufacturers, and other designers. Familiarity with collaborative tools within Catia and clear documentation practices help overcome these challenges and ensure a smooth workflow.

Position Summary:         The Lead CAD Designer will be a critical member of our engineering and design team, responsible for the comprehensive 3D design and development of automotive headlamps. This role requires an expert user of CATIA, with a proven track record of successful design execution within the automotive lighting sector. The ideal candidate will possess an exceptional understanding of design for manufacturing (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and an acute awareness of aesthetic and regulatory requirements for exterior automotive lighting. While Catia will be the primary tool, a working knowledge or exposure to Siemens NX will also be beneficial.

Position Duties:              - Lead the 3D CAD design and modeling of complex automotive headlamp systems and their individual components using Catia, from concept to production release.

                                    - Create and manage complex assemblies, including interference checks, clearance analysis, and tolerance stacks.

                                    - Generate detailed 2D drawings with appropriate GD&T, material specifications, and manufacturing notes.

                                     - Participate in cross-functional product development meetings, providing expert CAD support and technical insights.

                                     - Mentor junior CAD designers and contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes and best practices.

                                     - Stay abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and software advancements in CAD and automotive lighting.

                                     - Utilize knowledge of Siemens NX for specific projects or data exchange as needed.

Requirements:               Minimum of 10 years of professional experience as a CAD Designer in the automotive industry, specifically with extensive experience designing automotive headlamps. Demonstrated expert-level proficiency in Catia CAD software, including solid modeling, surface modeling, assembly design, drafting, and advanced surfacing techniques. Proven experience in designing complex plastic injection molded components, die-cast parts, and sheet metal components as they relate to headlamp assemblies. Strong understanding of automotive product development cycles and release processes. In-depth knowledge of GD&T principles and their application in 2D drawings.  Familiarity with various manufacturing processes relevant to headlamp production (e.g., injection molding, vacuum metallization, hard coating, assembly).
