Role Definition:
The Caterpillar High School Work-Study Manufacturing Rotational Program is designed to provide Livingston Area Career Center (LACC) students with hands-on exposure to modern manufacturing careers. Participants rotate through Assembly, Machining, and Welding operations, gaining practical experience, developing technical and professional skills, and exploring career opportunities in advanced manufacturing. Students work under direct supervision and are provided structured learning experiences that complement their classroom instruction. This program is intended to prepare students for future careers, internships, apprenticeships, and post-secondary education opportunities within manufacturing and skilled trades.
This position is located in Pontiac, IL with an anticipated start date of Fall 2026. Part-time hours (10 to 32 hours per week) will be expected.
Key Learning Areas:
Assembly Rotation
  • Learn basic assembly processes and manufacturing workflows.
  • Assist with component preparation and assembly support activities.
  • Read and follow visual work instructions and standard work documents.
  • Practice quality checks and inspection techniques.
  • Participate in team-based continuous improvement activities.

Machining Rotation
  • Learn fundamentals of CNC and conventional machining operations.
  • Observe machine setup, tooling, and machining processes.
  • Assist with material handling, measurement, and inspection activities.
  • Develop skills using precision measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Gain exposure to blueprint reading and manufacturing specifications.

Welding Rotation
  • Learn welding safety requirements and industry best practices.
  • Observe and assist with welding preparation activities.
  • Participate in material preparation, grinding, and basic fabrication support tasks.
  • Develop an understanding of welding processes, equipment, and quality standards.
  • Learn how welds are inspected and verified for quality.

Job duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Follow all Caterpillar safety rules and PPE requirements.
  • Demonstrate positive attendance, punctuality, and dependability.
  • Complete assigned learning activities and work assignments.
  • Work effectively with mentors, supervisors, and team members.
  • Ask questions and actively participate in learning opportunities.
  • Accurately complete required training and documentation activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and team discussions.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and respect in all interactions.

Student Trainee Qualifications:
  • Must be an incoming high school junior or senior for the 2026-2027 school year enrolled in the LACC Work-Study program.
  • Must be within commutable distance to the Pontiac, IL facility with reliable transportation.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.

Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):
  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to perform repetitive operations.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.

Top Candidates May Also Have:
  • Ability to follow documented procedures for standard work, to perform work safely and free of defects.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Aptitude for assembly and mechanical work.
  • Interest in a potential career in manufacturing.

What You Will Get:
Student Trainee Hourly Rate: Hourly rate is based on your grade level for the 2026-2027 school year. Juniors receive $15.00/hr; Seniors receive $16.00/hr.
Student Trainee Benefits: The total rewards package, beyond hourly pay, includes:
  • Accrued Paid Time Off (PTO).
  • Optional medical coverage.
  • Optional voluntary benefits.

Summary Pay Range:
$15.00 - $17.50
Intern Hourly Rate:
An intern's hourly rate is based on the major/degree being pursued and the number of completed academic hours achieved before the start of the internship.
