What does a catering intern do?

A Catering Intern assists catering managers and staff with the planning, setup, execution, and breakdown of events such as weddings, corporate meetings, and parties. Their responsibilities often include helping with food preparation, setting up buffet or dining areas, serving guests, and ensuring events run smoothly. Interns may also help with inventory, logistics, and post-event clean-up, gaining valuable experience in hospitality and event management. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to learn about the catering industry and develop customer service skills.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a catering intern?

To thrive as a Catering Intern, you need a basic understanding of food preparation, event setup, and safety standards, often supported by a high school diploma or enrollment in a hospitality program. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management tools, and food handling certifications is valuable. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart. These skills ensure smooth event operations, high-quality service, and a positive experience for both guests and team members.

You'll likely work closely with both kitchen and front-of-house teams, gaining insight into both the culinary and organizational aspects of catering. This role offers valuable exposure to real-world event management and client service, which can help you build essential industry skills.
