Job description

The Cataloging Associate supports access to library materials by cataloging, classifying, and processing physical and digital resources for the JCPL collection. This position ensures the accuracy and quality of catalog records, authority control, and vendor-supplied materials while applying current library standards and providing guidance to staff on cataloging policies and procedures.
Position must comply with laws governing patron privacy and confidentiality under CRS24-90-119, and the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association, as well as ADA governing public access to space and technology.

Description:
Hiring Range: $23.39 - $29.24 per hour.

  • RECORD CONTROL: Responsible for quality check of vendor-supplied records. Compares vendor supplied processing to catalog record and JCPL processing profile. Ensures vendor records load and display correctly in the public catalog. Performs minor data corrections for series titles and subject headings as needed. Performs copy cataloging for library materials for which shelf-ready cataloging and processing is not available. Refers complex copy cataloging questions to Librarians and refers authority clean-up projects to Catalog Librarians. Directs materials that need label reprints to the proper queue. Directs items that pass quality checks to proper queue.
  • DATA CONTROL: Monitors street dates and turnaround to ensure meeting availability deadlines. Prioritizes materials for an efficient workflow to meet deadlines and production goals. Assists Librarians in running and processing collection status reports. Updates records to bring them into compliance with current cataloging standards. Performs standard data quality checks and performs maintenance functions to improve quality. Participates in inventory control and reporting processes. Ensures currency of records for materials being added or deleted to the catalog.
  • OPERATIONAL DUTIES: Assists in monitoring workflows throughout the division and makes adjustments to improve processes. Assists in creating a positive and productive atmosphere in Collections. Assists in monitoring vendor performance. Tracks and reports vendor performance issues. Provides support for special projects. Keeps current on JCPL policies and procedures relevant to the unit and JCPL as a whole. Keeps current on cataloging rules, procedures and maintains expertise in cataloging software and products. Participates in software beta testing for Integrated Library Systems (ILS) and provides feedback to supervisor. Reports software performance issues to supervisor and systems administrator. Participates with others in cross-functional teams to accomplish goals and objectives. May assume responsibility as Person-in-Charge on a routine basis for assigned location. Takes appropriate actions for emergencies as Person-in-Charge. Ensures adherence to established policies, procedures and standards. Requests facility or equipment maintenance services.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum one year of related library experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in library science.
  • Previous experience in technical services, cataloging, acquisitions, or collections work in a public, academic, or special library.
  • Knowledge of cataloging standards and practices, including classification systems such as Dewey Decimal Classification.

Work Location:
This role is based at the Library Service Center (LSC), a non-public facing facility where staff support collection services and library operations behind the scenes.
