Casting Welder information

What is a casting welder?

Casting welders are skilled tradespeople who specialize in repairing, joining, or modifying metal castings using various welding techniques. They work primarily with cast metals such as iron, steel, or aluminum, often fixing defects or cracks that occur during the casting process. Casting welders must understand the properties of different metals and use appropriate welding methods to maintain the structural integrity of the cast component. Their work is essential in industries like manufacturing, automotive, and heavy machinery, where cast metal parts are commonly used.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a casting welder?

To thrive as a Casting Welder, you need a solid understanding of welding techniques, metallurgy, blueprint reading, and typically a vocational qualification or welding certification. Familiarity with welding machines, oxy-fuel equipment, and inspection tools such as ultrasonic testers is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and manual dexterity are important soft skills that set top performers apart. These abilities ensure precise, high-quality welds on cast components, contributing to product safety and reliability in manufacturing or repair environments.

What are some common challenges faced by casting welders, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Casting Welders often encounter challenges such as working with cast materials that have impurities or irregular surfaces, which can affect weld quality and consistency. To address these issues, welders typically use specialized techniques and thorough preparation, including pre-cleaning, preheating, and selecting appropriate filler materials. Additionally, close collaboration with quality control teams and other fabricators helps ensure that welds meet industry standards and reduces the risk of defects. Continuous training and staying updated with the latest welding technologies can also help Casting Welders overcome these challenges effectively.

Job description

Position Summary

At AMB, Welders play a critical role in the production of propulsion bearings used in U.S. Navy surface ships and submarines. A Welder at AMB is expected to be proficient in GTAW, SMAW, and GMAW processes. This is a hands-on, multi-functional role that also supports assembly and babbitting operations. Day to day, you will be performing weld repairs on castings, assembling large components, and running centrifugal casting of babbitt.

As a Welder, you will:

• Read and follow drawings, factory documentation, and welding procedures to perform your work correctly.

• Take ownership of your work cell — keep it running efficiently, meet deadlines, and make quality your standard.

• Weld on copper nickel, nickel copper, stainless, and various grades of cast steel in accordance with established welding procedures.

• Perform centrifugal casting operations to produce plain journal bearings.

• Support general assembly work across AMB's product lines.

• Check your own work, meet quality requirements, and communicate any non-conformances through the proper channels.

• Keep your area clean and safe and take care of your equipment through daily maintenance routines.

The ideal candidate has:

• Five or more years of welding experience.

• A genuine interest in learning and growing — someone who sees this as a career, not just a job.

• The ability to read and understand engineering drawings, specifications, weld procedures, and technical requirements.

• Excellent communication skills — you will work alongside different teams and individuals on a daily basis.

• A strong work ethic. You take ownership of your work, welcome a challenge, and look for solutions rather than workarounds.

Additional Requirements:

• Applicant will need to take an aptitude test as apart of the hiring process.

• Applicant will constantly remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.

• Applicant will regularly lift and move 25lbs in all directions.

• Lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stopping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position

• Must be available for overtime and weekend hours as needed

• To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) candidates must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
