Yard Hand


We are a leading, well-respected, full-service lumber yard, featuring a wide range of building materials and supplies for contractors, and DIY enthusiasts, including hardware, roofing, fencing, vinyl siding, insulation, paint, windows, doors, and millwork, to meet our all of our customers’ needs. Additionally, we also serve as a resource for the community, contributing to a variety of local development and construction projects.


The Yard Associate supports daily yard operations by handling materials, loading and unloading trucks, maintaining organized inventory areas, and assisting with deliveries and customer service. During the first 90 days, this role is primarily focused on learning the yard, understanding product locations, safely handling materials, and performing essential physical tasks that keep operations moving efficiently. This position is expected to develop the skills and knowledge needed to grow into a focused area such as sales, delivery, inventory, or yard management based on performance, aptitude, and business needs.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBLITIES


Primary Duties for First 4 Weeks


Lift, move, and handle heavy building materials including bags of ready mix and cement.

Stack lumber and stock materials neatly, safely, and in their correct locations.

Load customers and company trucks by hand or with forklift support.

Unload incoming trucks and put materials away accurately.

Learn the names, uses, and locations of materials throughout the yard and store.

Operate a forklift safely once trained and authorized.

Assist with delivery truck loading and, if assigned and approved, operate delivery trucks.

Support the overall flow of yard operations by staying productive and assisting where needed.


Customer and Store Support


Assist customers in their selection of products, and direct them to the correct materials/department.

Invoice customers using the point-of-sale system and cash register when needed.

Answer phones and direct calls appropriately.

Provide courteous, helpful, and professional service to customers at all times.


Yard and Facility Upkeep


Maintain the yard, store floor, and work areas, keeping it clean and organized.

Sweep floors and help maintain restrooms and common areas.

Report safety concerns, damage, or maintenance issues promptly.

Help maintain a safe and orderly environment for employees and customers.


General Team Support


Assist other team members as needed to complete daily work.

Learn company procedures, safety expectations, and product knowledge during the training period.

Show initiative by identifying work that needs to be done rather than waiting for instructions.


Physical and Mental Requirements (ADA)


Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.

Lift and carry materials up to 100 pounds.

Bend, stoop, reach, climb, push, and pull as required.

Safely operate forklifts and other material handling equipment when trained.

Maintain awareness of surroundings in an active yard environment.

Follow instructions and complete tasks accurately in a fast-paced work setting Stand and walk for extended periods, throughout the course of the workday.


Working Conditions


Primarily outdoor work environment exposed to weather conditions.

Frequent interaction with contractors, customers, and delivery drivers.

Regular use of forklifts and material handling equipment.

Noise levels typical of warehouse and yard operations.


Essential Qualifications


High School Diploma or GED

Valid driver’s license

Forklift Certification preferred.

Experience in lumber yards, warehouses, construction materials, delivery driving, retail hardware, or general labor is preferred.
