What is a case management internship?

A Case Management Internship is a hands-on training program where students or recent graduates work under the supervision of experienced case managers to learn how to coordinate care and services for clients in settings like healthcare, social services, or nonprofit organizations. Interns typically assist with client assessments, documentation, planning, and follow-up, gaining practical experience in helping individuals access resources and support. This internship is valuable for those seeking careers in social work, healthcare, or human services, as it provides real-world experience working with diverse populations and multidisciplinary teams.

What types of cases and client populations will I typically support during a case management internship?

During a Case Management Internship, you can expect to work with diverse client populations such as individuals experiencing homelessness, families in crisis, youth, older adults, or people with mental health or substance use challenges. The specific cases you handle will depend on the agency’s focus, but interns are commonly involved in client intake, needs assessments, resource referrals, and follow-up support. You'll likely collaborate closely with social workers, healthcare providers, and community resource organizations. This exposure provides valuable hands-on experience in client advocacy, interagency communication, and practical problem-solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a case management intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Case Management Intern, you generally need a background in social work, psychology, or a related field, along with strong organizational and research skills. Familiarity with case management software, documentation systems, and basic Microsoft Office tools is often expected. Excellent communication, empathy, and problem-solving abilities help interns build rapport with clients and support interdisciplinary teams. These competencies are important for effectively coordinating resources, supporting client needs, and learning foundational case management practices.
