Job description

Carpenter Laborer
Gulf Copper is currently laborers to support our carpenters on the Texas Battleship in our Galveston shipyard.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for the following: Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Laborers must be familiar with the duties of other craftworkers and with the materials, tools, and machinery they use. All workers in a team must collaborate to carry out assigned construction tasks efficiently.
  2. Perform general clean-up work such as:
    • Sweeping
    • Mopping
    • Repairing
  3. Prepare and maintain a clean work area at production/construction sites.
  4. Before performing any hot work, inspect the area to ensure that all flammable and combustible materials have been removed.
  5. Delivering all safety equipment (including appropriate fire extinguisher) to site.
  6. Staying stationed in the work site such that they can respond quickly to prevent fires.
  7. Conduct frequent inspections of the hot work areas during hot work to ensure the area is still safe and working conditions are favorable.
  8. Assist fitters and welders with setting up equipment like torch hoses, extension cords and welding lines before hot work begins.

  10. Reporting fires and accidents to the officer of the deck and Firewatch Coordinator immediately.
  11. Remaining in place for thirty minutes following work performed to clean the area and to ensure worksite conditions remain safe.

Required Education & Experience:
  1. High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  2. One or more years' experience in Industrial and/or marine industry preferred.

Working Conditions:
  1. Regular exposure to all weather conditions, especially hot, humid and / or rainy weather, combined with regular work time indoors in environmentally controlled conditions.
  2. Most construction laborers do physically demanding work. Some work at great heights or outdoors in all weather conditions.
  3. Must wear hearing, eye, and other necessary protective equipment.
  4. Some climbing (100 feet) and lifting (50 lbs.) involved.

Necessary Equipment Operation:
  1. Standard PPE

Special Skills:
  1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  2. High performance and a strong team player.
  3. Laborers need manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, good physical fitness, a good sense of balance, and an ability to work as a member of a team.
  4. Ability to carry out directives effectively, and on time.
  5. Having a desire to assist and clean up without the need for direction.
