Job description

In this position you will work as a member of the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center (MWEOC), Facilities Management, Maintenance Branch, Carpentry and Metal team. MWEOC is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, approximately 60 miles west of Washington, D.C. The ideal candidate will be skilled in carpentry, painting and/or masonry trades with ability to repair, modify and maintain site buildings while using safety gear, gloves, hard hats, etc.

Qualifications:The qualification requirements listed below must be met within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker (Carpentry) without more than normal supervision.
  • I have the ability to perform common maintenance and carpentry tasks. I have assisted others with construction tasks such as basic painting wood, metal and/or concrete surfaces, using and operating hand and power tools, working from sketches and using basic techniques to lay brick, block and stone. I have performed these tasks/duties under close supervision of a supervisor or senior work leader.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standard. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside, with exposure to prevailing weather conditions. Exposure to dirt, spray, and fumes may be present. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
Physical Effort: Due to the nature of the work, heavy lifting and physical exertion may be required during normal day-to-day and emergency operations. As a result, the incumbent will be required to lift up to 50 lbs. On a recurring basis and may be required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time. The incumbent may work from scaffolds, ladders, or platforms. Frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching may be required and the incumbent must be able to work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods, including performing physically strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. The incumbent may work overtime hours as required. Required to wear protective equipment and clothing if needed.
