The Royal Caribbean Group's Decarbonization Technology team has an exciting career opportunity for a full Project Engineer, Decarbonization reporting to Senior Director, Decarbonization Newbuild.

Position Summary

The Engineer, Decarbonization supports the team lead and project leadership in advancing innovative energy and decarbonization retrofit projects through all stages of the technology funnel-from detailed technical evaluation and pilot execution to preparation for full-scale deployment. This role focuses on technical analysis, project coordination, data support, and execution assistance for higher-maturity decarbonization solutions aimed at improving energy efficiency and sustainability across the fleet.

The Engineer collaborates closely with shore-based and onboard teams to support technical implementation activities, monitor project performance, document learnings, and contribute insights that support replication and scaling of successful innovations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Technology evaluation & innovation support
    • Supports evaluation of energy efficiency and decarbonization technologies, including feasibility studies, technical assessments, and pilot testing onboard ships or shore facilities.
    • Contributes technical inputs and operational insights that support identification, refinement, and replication of innovative retrofit solutions.
  1. ย Project coordination & execution support
    • Collaborates with project leads and crossfunctional teams to support planning, scheduling, and execution of activities from pilot to scale, ensuring timely delivery and integration.
    • Supports tracking of actions, milestones, and dependencies to ensure timely delivery and integration.
  1. Data collection, analysis & performance tracking
    • Gathers, analyzes, and interprets operational and performance data to support technology validation, benchmarking, and decisionmaking.
    • Supports monitoring project performance against technical, energy, and emissions objectives.
  1. Technical documentation & reporting
    • Prepares technical reports, test plans, dashboards, and documentation to communicate findings, project status, and lessons learned.
  1. Implementation & operational support
    • Supports planning and execution of energy efficiency and decarbonization retrofit projects, including equipment installations, system modifications, and operational adjustments onboard ships.
    • Assists with troubleshooting and issue resolution during installation, testing, and postimplementation phases
  1. Technology funnel administration & readiness
    • Tracks project pipelines, documentation, testing protocols, and readiness criteria to support structured progression through development and deployment stages.
    • Supports consistency and discipline in technology evaluation and deployment processes.
  1. Stakeholder & vendor coordination
    • Coordinates with ship crews, shore teams, vendors, and partners to support project activities and ensure safety and operational standards are upheld.
  1. Continuous improvement, innovation & compliance support
    • Contributes to identifying improvement opportunities and participates in technology scouting and validation activities.
    • Supports integration of proven solutions into fleet operations through documentation, learning capture, and replication support.
    • Ensures assigned activities adhere to relevant standards, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.

Financial & Quantitative Support

  • Supports analysis, communication, and reporting on progress toward emissions-reduction targets for assigned energy projects.
  • Supports analysis of OpEx and CapEx implications of forecast or scope changes for retrofit initiatives, including developing IRR and Payback calculations.
  • Supports monthly financial spending and project variance reporting.

Qualifications and Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field; specialization in energy systems advantageous.
  • 3+ years of experience in maritime engineering, energy efficiency projects, sustainability initiatives, or technology implementation within the cruise or shipping industry.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and troubleshooting skills with experience in system testing and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with marine energy management standards (e.g., ISO 50001), decarbonization technologies, and marine systems.
  • Experience supporting pilot projects, technology testing, retrofit initiatives, or maritime R&D activities.
  • Proficiency with engineering and data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, CAD; Python a plus).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to synthesize complex technical information into clear, structured insights.
  • Exceptional organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic, projectbased environment.
  • Collaborative, detailoriented, and proactive working style.

Internal / External Relationships

  • Collaborates with ship crews, engineering teams, vendors, and partners to support project execution.
  • Reports technical findings, project status, risks, and lessons learned to project leads and managers.
  • Travel to ships, shore facilities, and partner sites as required.
