How much do cargo surveyor jobs pay per year?
What does a cargo surveyor do?
What does a typical day look like for a cargo surveyor, and how is the work environment structured?
A typical day for a Cargo Surveyor involves visiting ports, warehouses, or vessels to inspect, measure, and document cargo shipments for quality, quantity, and compliance with regulations. The work is often hands-on and can require being outdoors or onboard ships in a variety of weather conditions, sometimes involving irregular hours depending on vessel schedules. Cargo Surveyors frequently collaborate with shipping agents, clients, and port staff to ensure all parties are informed of survey results. While much of the role is independently driven, surveyors may also work as part of a team, especially when handling large or complex shipments. This dynamic environment offers opportunities to develop expertise in international trade and shipping operations.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the cargo surveyor position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Cargo Surveyor, you need a strong grounding in cargo inspection, measurement techniques, and maritime regulations, often supported by a relevant technical or maritime qualification. Familiarity with industry-standard equipment like measuring tapes, sampling devices, digital scales, and reporting software is vital, and certifications such as IMDG (International Maritime Dangerous Goods) or relevant safety training can be advantageous. Excellent attention to detail, clear communication, and problem-solving abilities are valuable soft skills for documenting findings and coordinating with stakeholders. These competencies ensure accurate cargo assessments, regulatory compliance, and effective communication with clients and shipping teams.

Their duties may also include investigating cargo damage, supervising weighing and sampling, and preparing detailed reports for clients.
