Career development refers to the ongoing process of managing your life, learning, and work to progress toward your professional goals. It involves gaining new skills, exploring career options, seeking opportunities for growth, and planning steps to advance in your career. This can include formal education, on-the-job training, networking, and mentorship. Career development is beneficial for both employees and employers, as it helps individuals achieve their goals and organizations retain skilled workers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in career development, and why are they important?

A successful Career Development professional needs a strong understanding of career counseling theories, labor market trends, and typically a degree in counseling, human resources, or a related field. Familiarity with assessment tools like MBTI, career planning software, and relevant certifications such as the NCDA’s Certified Career Counselor are valuable.
