Requirements
The Surgical Assistant is responsible for assisting in the care and preparation of surgical patients. Functions as a member of the sterile team in donning gowns and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field, and issuing instruments to surgeons.
  • Sets up tables, instruments and supplies for plastic surgery operations
  • Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative areas
  • Prepares and passes instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies needed in the operative procedure and maintains a correct count of the same
  • Assists in maintenance and care of specimens for laboratory analysis
  • Decontaminates all equipment, instruments and supplies
  • Cleans and stocks storage room as required
  • Assists with table equipment, positioning patients, application of plaster dressings
  • Prepares and maintains the sterile field for the surgical procedure
  • Assists in discharging patients from the Operating Room Suite
  • Follows established HIPPA policies and procedures at all times
  • Assumes accountability and responsibility for attendance and timely completion of mandatory training programs, unit specific requirements (i.e. BLS, ACLS, Surgical Assistant Certification) and unit meetings.
Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma required
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in an Operating Room setting required
  • Surgical Assistant Certification required
  • Holds and maintains an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
  • Prolonged periods of standing, reaching and bending
  • Must be able to lift up to 10-20 pounds at times
  • Good motor coordination required for rapid and accurate movements of the body and hand in response to visual and audio stimuli in the Operating Room
