How much do cardiac rehab tech jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for cardiac rehab tech in the United States is $18.03, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $20.19 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by cardiac rehab techs when supporting patients during exercise sessions?

Cardiac Rehab Techs often encounter challenges such as motivating patients who may feel anxious or discouraged about physical activity after a cardiac event. They also need to carefully monitor patients' vital signs and respond quickly to any signs of distress during exercise. Balancing individualized care plans with group session dynamics and effectively communicating with nurses, physicians, and other rehab staff are also key aspects of the role. Overcoming these challenges requires strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cardiac rehab tech?

To thrive as a Cardiac Rehab Tech, you need a background in exercise science or a related health field, with CPR/AED certification and knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology. Familiarity with ECG monitoring, heart rate monitors, and rehabilitation software is typically required. Excellent interpersonal skills, motivational abilities, and attention to detail help foster patient engagement and ensure safety. These skills are crucial for providing safe, effective care and supporting patients’ recovery during cardiac rehabilitation programs.

What is the difference between Cardiac Rehab Tech vs Physical Therapist?

AspectCardiac Rehab TechPhysical Therapist
CredentialsCPR certification, sometimes specialized in cardiac careDoctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) or similar degree, state licensure
Work EnvironmentHospitals, cardiac rehab centers, outpatient clinicsHospitals, outpatient clinics, rehab centers
Job RoleAssist patients with monitored exercise, monitor vitals, support rehab programsAssess, diagnose, and treat a variety of physical conditions through therapy

While both roles involve patient care in rehabilitation settings, Cardiac Rehab Techs focus on assisting with monitored cardiac exercises and supporting recovery, whereas Physical Therapists provide comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for broader physical conditions. The roles often overlap in cardiac rehab environments but differ in scope and required credentials.

What is a cardiac rehab tech?

Cardiac Rehab Techs, or Cardiac Rehabilitation Technicians, are healthcare professionals who assist patients recovering from heart-related conditions or surgeries. They work under the supervision of nurses and physicians to monitor patients during exercise sessions, track vital signs, and provide education about lifestyle changes. Their role is essential in helping patients safely regain strength, improve cardiovascular health, and reduce the risk of future cardiac events.

How to become a cardiac rehab technician?

To become a cardiac rehab technician, individuals typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by completing a certification program in cardiac or exercise physiology. Certification from organizations like the American Society of Exercise Physiologists or the American Heart Association can enhance job prospects, and on-the-job training is often provided in clinical settings.
