Job description

Position Title: Monitor Tech - Centralized Monitoring

Scheduled Hours/Shift: 24-hour coverage; Days and Nights
Work Type: Part-Time

The Monitor Technician in Centralized Monitoring is responsible for the continuous surveillance and interpretation of patient cardiac monitoring systems to support safe, high-quality patient care. This role monitors cardiac rhythms, accurately documents patient information in accordance with established protocols, and promptly communicates significant rhythm changes or abnormalities to registered nurses and other clinical team members.

Working in a centralized monitoring environment that provides 24-hour coverage, the Monitor Technician plays a critical role in the early identification of potentially life-threatening cardiac events. Through vigilant observation, accurate rhythm interpretation, and timely notification of clinical staff, the technician contributes significantly to patient safety, clinical decision-making, and overall patient outcomes. Successful performance in this position requires strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to remain focused in a fast-paced healthcare setting.

Maintains ongoing, high-level surveillance of patient’s cardiac rhythms and notifies nursing/clinicians of any rate/rhythm changes according to clinician/provider orders.

Monitors patient’s heart rhythm and documents on patient record per departmental standards. May initiate and discontinue monitoring equipment on admission, transfer, or discharge. Performs configuration, troubleshooting, cleaning and tracking of devices as necessary.

Performs clerical duties related to admission, discharge, and documentation of patient information from Centralized Monitoring. Answers telephone and communicates clearly when receiving information from units or providers.

Uses clear and complete communication with unit personnel when delivering information about changes in patient rhythm.


Satisfactory completion of cardiac arrhythmia classes and ability to interpret cardiac rhythms within six months of hiring. Prior medical terminology or medical office coursework preferred.

Six months of nursing assistant or prior clerical experience in a healthcare field. Minimum of one year nursing assistant experience preferred.

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Ability to document accurately and timely.

Multicultural sensitivity.

Microsoft Office – basic computer skills.

Customer/patient focused.

Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
