What is a Cardiac CRNA?

A Cardiac CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) is a specialized advanced practice nurse who provides anesthesia care for patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic surgeries. They work closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to manage anesthesia before, during, and after procedures. Their responsibilities include administering anesthesia, monitoring patients' vital signs, managing pain, and ensuring patient stability. Cardiac CRNAs often work in hospitals, surgical centers, and cardiovascular units, requiring advanced skills in hemodynamic management and critical care.

What does a Cardiac CRNA do?

As a Cardiac CRNA, your day typically starts with preoperative patient assessments, reviewing medical histories, and collaborating with the cardiac surgical team to develop anesthesia plans. You will administer and manage anesthesia during complex heart surgeries, monitor patients' vital signs, and respond rapidly to any hemodynamic changes throughout the procedure. Postoperative care, accurate documentation, and debriefing with the surgical team are also important parts of the role. Most Cardiac CRNAs work closely with cardiothoracic surgeons, perfusionists, and other anesthesia providers in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment focused on patient safety and positive outcomes.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Cardiac CRNA?

To excel as a Cardiac CRNA, you must have advanced knowledge in anesthesia administration, cardiac physiology, and perioperative care, typically supported by a master's or doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia and CRNA certification. Experience with cardiac monitoring systems, advanced airway management tools, and electronic health records is crucial for this role. Strong decision-making abilities, excellent communication, and the capacity to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills. These competencies are vital for ensuring patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes in high-stakes cardiac procedures.

How much do cardiac CRNAs make?

Cardiac CRNAs typically earn between $150,000 and $200,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and work setting. They often work in hospitals or surgical centers, providing anesthesia for cardiac surgeries and requiring certification in nurse anesthesia and specialized cardiac training.
