What is a carbon accounting analyst?

A Carbon Accounting Analyst is a professional who measures, tracks, and reports an organization’s greenhouse gas emissions. They analyze data on energy use, transportation, waste, and other emission sources to calculate the carbon footprint. Their work helps companies comply with environmental regulations, set sustainability goals, and identify opportunities to reduce emissions. Carbon Accounting Analysts often collaborate with sustainability teams and provide data for environmental reporting frameworks such as the GHG Protocol or CDP.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a carbon accounting analyst?

To thrive as a Carbon Accounting Analyst, you need a strong background in environmental science, data analysis, and knowledge of greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting standards, usually supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with carbon accounting software, GHG Protocol, and sustainability reporting frameworks like CDP or GRI is typically required.
