Description
Overview:
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor Rail Vehicle Maintenance II, the Carman is responsible for performing inspections, preventative maintenance, repair, and modification of railcars at MxV Rail. May be required to apply and assist in applying instrumentation and special components to test vehicles under the direction of Instrumentation and Test Engineering personnel. Inspects, maintains, repairs, and modifies per individual test specifications all rolling stock, including passenger equipment and special rail vehicles, at MxV Rail.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Install special test equipment, including instrumentation transducers, on test vehicles when required.
  • Prepare vehicles for testing, including the installation of prototype components.
  • Inspect test cars for safety violations and mechanical integrity. Inform the Supervisor, Mechanical Maintenance, Project Engineer, or Test Controller of any problems or potential problems.
  • Inspect cars coming from or returning to the interchange. Report any discrepancies to the Mechanical Supervisor or his designee. Perform AAR (Association of American Railroads) Field Manual maintenance and repair on freight and passenger car equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
  • Works with staff to ensure a safe and clean work environment.
  • Perform the duties of Mechanical Technicians or Machinists when required. May include limited duties within the Motor Pool, Instrumentation, Machine Shop, etc.
  • Assist in locomotive maintenance and repairs, as required.
  • May be required to assist in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of locomotives and other equipment.
  • Promote teamwork and Continuous Quality Improvement.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment is a high priority. Proper handling and storage of equipment and tools are not only key to good housekeeping but also to safety.
  • Ensures that all duties and responsibilities are performed in a safe manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
Required Skills & Abilities:
  • Open to learning and living the MxV Rail values (Momentum, Insight, Teamwork, Rigor, Purpose) in all facets of the organization's work.
  • Conduct inspections to identify defects.
  • Perform maintenance on rail cars.
  • Have extensive knowledge of the AAR Field Manual, shop policy, AAR Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices, and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Due to the test environment, a Carman must be skilled enough to help plan and implement major car modifications to suit testing requirements and must know what modifications can be safely applied.
  • Communicate/interface with internal/external customers and co-workers in a positive, professional manner.
  • Have excellent knowledge of hand and power tools, knowledge of appropriate standard component measurement devices, and be certified to perform welding/cutting functions
  • Working knowledge of AAR Rules of Interchange, AAR Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices, Safe shop practices, Basic railcar construction, Air brake systems, and Proper procedures for safe Welding, Cutting, and Burning practices.
  • Communicate with others verbally and in writing, including technical information, job procedure recommendations, and other work-related information.
  • Experience in effectively operating tools required to repair freight/passenger cars, such as 100-ton jacks, air tools, compressors, generators, welders, hydraulic equipment, or torches.
  • MxV Rail policy requires all prospective employees to complete a criminal background check (Disclosure for Consumer Reports Consent Form) and a pre-employment substance abuse screening (Applicant Consent for Drug Testing Form) as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five years of experience as a Carman.
  • Extensive Working knowledge of the Field Manual of the AAR Rules of Interchange, AAR Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices, Safe Shop Practices, and Basic Railcar Construction.
  • Worked in and with AAR Certifications with QA audits.
  • Certifications in welding both with Wire Feed and Arc welders.

  • Environment: Railroad environment: exposure to noise, grease, fumes, gases, electrical energy, toxic materials, and inclement weather conditions.
  • Physical: Sufficient physical ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50 lb.). Heavier lifting may be required, but only with proper assistance, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders, working at height, diagnosing equipment maintenance needs through listening and feeling machine surfaces, and working in confined spaces.
  • Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate the equipment. Ability to discern between colored wires and color wiring diagrams.
  • Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
