What is canvassing?

A canvassing job involves going door-to-door, making phone calls, or engaging with people in public spaces to promote a cause, product, or service. Canvassers often work for political campaigns, nonprofits, or sales organizations to generate support, fundraise, or gather information. Strong communication skills and persistence are key to success in this role.

What does a canvasser do?

A typical day for a canvasser involves traveling to assigned neighborhoods or public spaces, engaging with residents face-to-face to share information or gather feedback, and recording their interactions using digital tools or forms. Canvassers often work in teams and receive daily training or strategy briefings before going into the field. The role requires walking for extended periods, handling various weather conditions, and interacting respectfully with people from different backgrounds. Success in canvassing is measured by outreach goals met, data accuracy, and quality of community engagement. Over time, experienced canvassers may move into leadership or trainer roles, managing teams and coordinating outreach campaigns.

What skills and qualifications are needed for canvassing?

To thrive in canvassing, you need strong communication skills, persistence, and the ability to engage with diverse communities, often without requiring formal education. Canvassers may use mobile data collection apps, tablets, or CRM systems to record and track outreach efforts. Exceptional interpersonal skills, active listening, and adaptability help canvassers build rapport and handle objections effectively. These qualities are crucial for achieving outreach goals, gathering accurate information, and representing the organization positively in the field.

Is canvassing a hard job?

Canvassing is often physically and mentally demanding, requiring persistence, strong communication skills, and the ability to handle rejection. The job typically involves going door-to-door or making calls, which can be tiring but is straightforward for those comfortable with direct interaction and outdoor work.

Is canvassing illegal?

Canvassing as a job involves soliciting opinions, sales, or support through direct contact and is generally legal when conducted within local laws and regulations. However, certain restrictions may apply, such as requiring permits or adhering to no-solicitation zones, and laws vary by jurisdiction. It is important for canvassers to understand and follow applicable rules to ensure lawful activity.

Job description

The job market is competitive and can be unpredictable. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, non-traditional way to jump into real estate and also want something that comes with real earning potential, we’d love to tell you a little more about what we're doing over at Canvas Homes.

Couple of things to put on your radar:

  • This is a true sales role where the main focus is building and maintaining strong relationships with investors and clients.
  • Success comes from consistent networking, reaching out to people, and nurturing those connections over time.
  • Important note: You’ll need to have an active North Carolina real estate license before your official start date.
  • It’s a 100% commission gig — meaning you eat what you kill. The more you hustle and close deals, the more you make.
  • Every day looks a little different. You’ll be making calls, meeting with investors, networking, and checking out properties — you won’t be stuck behind a desk all day.
  • We have a solid onboarding and training program to help you get started, plus ongoing support and regular feedback from the team.

Whether you’re already in real estate and wanting a better setup, are looking to switch careers, OR are simply a recent graduate trying to learn more, Canvas Homes is definitely an opportunity worth exploring.

If any of this sounds interesting, we’d be happy to hop on a no-pressure, casual conversation  to see if it’s a good fit for both sides.

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
