What are cannabis labs?

Cannabis labs are specialized facilities that test cannabis products for quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. They analyze samples for potency (levels of THC, CBD, etc.), contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals, mold, and residual solvents. These labs play a crucial role in ensuring that cannabis products are safe for consumption and accurately labeled. Their work supports both public health and the legal cannabis industry by providing reliable, science-based results.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a professional working in a cannabis lab?

Professionals in a cannabis lab are responsible for preparing and analyzing cannabis samples using specialized equipment such as gas or liquid chromatography instruments. Their daily tasks include following strict safety protocols, accurately documenting test results, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, and maintaining laboratory equipment. Collaboration with quality assurance teams and scientists is common to ensure product safety and consistency. The work environment is detail-oriented and often fast-paced, requiring strong organizational and communication skills.

What is the difference between Cannabis Lab vs Cannabis Technician?

AspectCannabis LabCannabis Technician

Work EnvironmentLaboratories, testing facilitiesCultivation sites, processing facilities
Industry UsageQuality testing, compliance, researchPlant care, harvesting, processing

The Cannabis Lab primarily focuses on testing and research within controlled laboratory settings, requiring scientific credentials. In contrast, a Cannabis Technician works directly with plant cultivation and processing, often with on-the-job training. Both roles are essential in the cannabis industry but serve different functions and environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cannabis Lab Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cannabis Lab Technician, you need a solid understanding of chemistry, laboratory procedures, and quality control, typically backed by a degree in chemistry, biology, or a related field. Familiarity with analytical instruments like HPLC, GC-MS, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS), as well as relevant certifications in laboratory safety, are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork skills help technicians ensure accuracy and maintain compliance. These competencies are crucial for delivering reliable test results and meeting regulatory standards in the rapidly growing cannabis industry.

Job description

Production Technician | Cannabis Manufacturing Full-Time · On-Site
The Opportunity
We're partnering with Our Client, a leading multi-state cannabis operator, to find a driven and detail-oriented Production Technician to join their manufacturing team. This isn't just a line job — it's a role for someone who takes genuine pride in what they produce, brings energy to the floor every day, and understands that precision and consistency are what separate a good product from a great one.
No prior cannabis experience required. The right attitude and work ethic matter most.
What You'll Own
You'll be hands-on from start to finish — taking raw cannabis flower and helping transform it into finished, compliant, shelf-ready products.
Production & Processing
  • Execute production goals daily while keeping safety and quality as your top priorities
  • Produce product according to established recipes and SOPs with consistency and accuracy
  • Apply independent judgment in product processing decisions, always with quality and output goals in mind
  • Adapt quickly as procedures, techniques, and priorities evolve
Packaging & Compliance
  • Package finished products into proper containers with correct labeling per state regulations
  • Electronically convert packaged products in the state traceability system
  • Ensure all processing procedures and lab protocols are followed without exception
  • Create and maintain accurate documentation of all manufacturing methods
Facility & Organization
  • Practice good housekeeping habits throughout the facility at all times
  • Leave your assigned work area clean, organized, and fully prepped at the end of every shift
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and proficiency with Windows-based software
Team & Culture
  • Show up as a true team player — collaborative, communicative, and self-motivated
  • Help build a positive floor environment through your attitude and work ethic
  • Take direction well and receive constructive feedback with a growth mindset
  • Perform repetitive tasks with sustained focus and efficiency — without letting quality slip
What You Bring
Nice to Have:
  • 1-2 years of experience in manufacturing, food processing, warehousing, or inventory
  • Some college coursework or a college degree
  • Familiarity with cannabis production or regulated manufacturing environments
Must Have:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills across varied audiences
  • Personal hygiene standards that align with facility health guidelines
  • Ability to follow instructions precisely and adapt quickly to changing procedures
Additional Requirements
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Valid driver's license or state ID required
  • Must pass all required background checks
  • Must remain compliant with all legal and company regulations for working in the cannabis industry
  • Must be approved by the Cannabis Compliance Board to receive an Agent Card
Physical Requirements
  • Regular reaching, grasping, bending, stooping, and repetitive motions throughout the shift
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods while maintaining focus
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and balance up to 50 lbs — with extreme care when handling product
  • Daily exposure to allergens including cannabis, tree nuts, and coconut oil
