What is cancer bioinformatics?

A Cancer Bioinformatics job involves analyzing and interpreting large-scale biological data to understand cancer biology and improve treatment strategies. Professionals in this field use computational tools, machine learning, and statistical methods to study genomic, transcriptomic, and clinical data. They work closely with oncologists, biologists, and data scientists to identify biomarkers, track tumor evolution, and develop personalized medicine approaches. This role is essential for advancing cancer research, optimizing therapies, and contributing to precision oncology.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a cancer bioinformatics specialist?

Professionals in Cancer Bioinformatics spend their days analyzing large-scale genomic datasets from cancer patients, designing algorithms to identify genetic mutations, and interpreting the biological significance of their findings. They often collaborate closely with oncologists, laboratory scientists, and other bioinformaticians to translate data into clinically meaningful insights. Tasks may also include developing and maintaining computational pipelines, preparing reports or visualizations, and staying updated on new analytical methods. This role blends technical and analytical work with teamwork, offering a dynamic work environment where your contributions can directly impact cancer research and patient outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for cancer bioinformatics?

To excel in Cancer Bioinformatics, you typically need a strong background in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistical analysis, and a degree in a life science or computational field. Familiarity with tools such as R, Python, next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms, and commonly used databases like TCGA or COSMIC is vital, and certifications in bioinformatics or genomics can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and strong communication skills help in collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary researchers and clinicians. Mastering these skills ensures accurate analysis of complex cancer datasets, supports collaborative discoveries, and advances precision oncology research.

What is the role of bioinformatics in cancer?

In cancer bioinformatics, professionals analyze large-scale genomic and molecular data to identify genetic mutations, biomarkers, and pathways involved in cancer development and progression. They use computational tools and algorithms to interpret sequencing data, aiding in diagnosis, personalized treatment, and research efforts.

Job description

Reporting to the Bioinformatics Senior Principal Investigator, the Bioinformatics Scientist will focus on complex experimental and clinical bioinformatics data sets.

Responsibilities:

  • Successfully execute bioinformatics studies in collaboration with other R&D wet-lab scientists, clinical teams and bioinformaticians on multiple defined priority areas.
  • Effectively communicate results in R&D and corporate meetings, prepare abstracts/manuscripts for publications and conferences.
  • Communicate with external stakeholders and vendors to recommend data capture technologies and pre-clinical experimental models best aligned with bioinformatics and wet-lab research objectives.
  • Implement and validate newly identified bioinformatics analytical advances using bioinformatics practices for reproducible and modular analysis (markdown documentation, r/v env locks, git, nextflow, snakemake, dockers, conda).
  • Review and improve existing in-house analysis R/Python workflows for large-scale Omics data using ML/AI integration to achieve efficient end-to-end analysis, scale-up, and predictive models.
  • Apply statistical predictive models (including AI) to wet-lab experiments and processes typically involved in drug discovery/development pipelines working with teams of scientists.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, abstracts, and manuscripts as required, following established standards for documentation, reproducibility of code and data integrity.

Qualifications:

  • A Ph. D or equivalent experience in biology, chemistry or bioinformatics with strong skills in the analysis of -Omics datasets (bulk/single-cell/spatial transcriptomics, WES, epigenomics, metabolomics and/or proteomics) in preclinical and clinical disease models.
  • Experience using Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence tools in the context of -Omics, single cell Atlases, clinical disease modeling and/or drug development pipelines.
  • Strong skills in bioinformatics, coding proficiency in R/Python, cloud computing environments. Experience with developing user-facing tools for data visualization and reporting (Shiny, Plotly, Quarto, etc) would be desirable.
  • Strong understanding of cell biology especially with respect to basic biochemistry, cell signaling, cell replication, transcription, translation processes.

About Us:

Celcuity is a commercial biotechnology company pursuing development of targeted therapies for treatment of multiple solid tumor indications. The company's first FDA-approved product is REVTORPYK (gedatolisib), a potent, pan-PI3K and mTORC1/2 inhibitor that comprehensively blockades the PAM pathway. REVTORPYK is approved to treat adults with HR+/HER2- advanced breast cancer that progressed on prior endocrine therapy in the metastatic setting.

The Phase 3 VIKTORIA-2 trial is evaluating gedatolisib in combination with palbociclib and either fulvestrant or letrozole for the first-line treatment of HR+/HER2- locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. A Phase 1/2 clinical trial evaluating gedatolisib in combination with darolutamide in patients with metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer, is ongoing.

Celcuity is an Equal-Opportunity Employer.

Celcuity is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices, and we strive to provide employees with total compensation packages that are competitive. For this role, the anticipated base pay range is $110,000 - $120,000 DOE.
