What Does a Camp Nurse Do?

A camp nurse works at a summer camp, providing first aid and nursing care for campers and staff. They work in the infirmary and accommodate emergency medical care and transport if it becomes necessary. These jobs are often available only during summer, but during that time a nurse is on call 24/7 to help people who experience an illness or injury. Other responsibilities and duties may include completing paperwork, educating the staff about how to provide basic first aid, and providing emotional and mental support to the people at the camp.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Camp Nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Camp Nurse, you need a valid nursing license (RN or LPN), first aid/CPR certification, and experience in pediatric or emergency care. Familiarity with basic medical supplies, EHRs, and camp-specific health protocols is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and a calm, compassionate demeanor help manage diverse situations and reassure campers. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensuring camper safety, addressing health concerns promptly, and maintaining a healthy camp environment.

What are some common challenges a Camp Nurse might face during a typical camp session?

Camp Nurses often encounter challenges such as managing a high volume of minor injuries and illnesses, adapting to limited medical resources, and providing care in an outdoor or non-clinical environment. They must also be prepared for emergencies, handle homesickness, and communicate effectively with both campers and camp staff. Flexibility, strong assessment skills, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are essential for success in this unique healthcare setting.

What are camp nurses?

Camp nurses are registered nurses or licensed practical nurses who provide healthcare services at camps, such as summer camps, day camps, or specialty programs. Their responsibilities include administering medications, treating minor injuries and illnesses, managing health records, and educating campers and staff about health and safety practices. Camp nurses play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of everyone at camp by responding to emergencies, preventing the spread of communicable diseases, and supporting campers with chronic health conditions. They often work closely with camp directors, counselors, and sometimes parents to maintain a healthy camp environment.
