What is a CAD design manager?

CAD Design Managers are professionals who oversee teams of computer-aided design (CAD) technicians and engineers. They are responsible for managing the design process, ensuring projects meet quality standards and deadlines, and integrating CAD technology into workflows. Their role often includes coordinating with other departments, mentoring staff, and staying up-to-date with the latest design software and industry trends. CAD Design Managers play a crucial role in industries such as architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and construction.

What does a CAD design manager do?

As a CAD Design Manager, you'll often find yourself splitting your time between direct involvement in complex design tasks and managing your team's workflow. While you may still handle critical or high-level CAD modeling, a significant portion of your responsibilities will include project planning, reviewing deliverables, mentoring team members, and ensuring quality standards are met. Effective communication and delegation are key, as you'll need to coordinate with other departments such as engineering, manufacturing, and project management to meet deadlines and client requirements. This dynamic role offers the opportunity to develop both your technical and leadership skills, making it a strong stepping stone for further advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CAD design manager?

To thrive as a CAD Design Manager, you need expertise in computer-aided design, engineering principles, and project management, typically supported by a degree in engineering or design and relevant managerial experience. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit, as well as familiarity with PLM systems and industry certifications, is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help coordinate teams and ensure project goals are met efficiently. These competencies are vital for delivering high-quality designs, fostering innovation, and managing teams in a dynamic design environment.

What is the difference between Cad Design Manager vs CAD Designer?

This role works closely with mechanical, electrical, systems, manufacturing, integration, logistics, and configuration management teams to ensure engineering products accurately reflect the evolving radar system design.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and experienced in maintaining complex engineering documentation while supporting multidisciplinary engineering teams in a fast-paced development environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using industry-standard CAD software.
  • Verify completed drawings for accuracy, completeness, dimensional integrity, engineering standards, and ASME compliance.
  • Review engineering documentation to identify design discrepancies, omissions, or conflicts and coordinate corrective actions with engineering teams.
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of the program's engineering configuration baseline throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Generate and maintain engineering Bills of Material (BOMs), indentured part lists, drawing trees, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Support Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) activities, including document control, engineering releases, change management, and configuration audits.
  • Coordinate with systems engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, manufacturing, integration, and logistics personnel to ensure engineering documentation remains current and accurately reflects system configuration.
  • Assist with engineering change requests, technical data package development, and design release activities.
  • Support design verification efforts, engineering reviews, manufacturing readiness activities, and integration testing.
  • Contribute to continuous process improvement initiatives that improve engineering documentation quality and configuration management practices.
  • Perform other engineering documentation and CAD support activities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
